John Schell's Tips For Gosford (Saturday - Provincial-Midway Championships)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 1:25PM SCAPE PROPERTIES MIDWAY 3YO & UP MAIDEN (1200 METRES)

2. Jared has been placed in five of his seven starts and resumes from a spell here. He has more upside than most and can give this a shake.

Dangers: 3. Extremely Frilly has run home well to be placed in both runs back from a spell and has minor claims again. 4. Gogmagog has been midfield in both runs to date and could be placed here without surprising. 7. Torie’s Rose is resuming from a spell and her trials have been good.

How to play it: Jared WIN.

Race 2 - 2:00PM SKILLION POOLS SUPER MAIDEN PLATE (1000 METRES)

2. Divine Bene is having his first race start here and won a trial midway through last year. He’s had another good trial leading into this debut and he’s drawn to advantage. He should be prominent throughout and can kick off his career with a win.

Dangers: 3. Snatchreilly has shown talent in his three-start career and resume here on the back of a couple of trials. He should be primed to sprint well fresh. 7. Single Benefactor has been placed in two of her three starts and resumes here in a race that suits. 6. Jamakin Money was midfield in good company at Canterbury early last year then was spelled. She’s won two spaced out trials since then and can show up in this without surprising.

How to play it: Divine Bene EACH WAY.

Race 3 - 2:35PM TERRIGAL WAMBERAL SHARKS RLFC 2YO MAIDEN PLATE (1100 METRES)

4. Formal is a colt on debut here and has had three trials leading into this in which he has performed well enough. He’s drawn well here and a bold showing is on the cards with Ashley Morgan taking the ride for James Cummings.

Dangers: 6. Marais was beaten in the last stride when finishing second at this track on debut. He has the ability to give this a shake. 9. Aye Aye Captain is a filly on debut and she’s had three trials, winning the latest of them at Randwick. She is worth plenty of thought. 8. The Three Hundred finished fifth in the Lonhro Plate when resuming and will find this much easier.

How to play it: Formal WIN.

Race 4 - 3:10PM TERRIGAL HOTEL PROVINCIAL BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

2. Troika improved on a resuming fifth at Nowra with a strong victory at Hawkesbury. He backed that up with a second at Kembla Grange and is racing well enough to give this a shake despite having a wide draw to contend with.

Dangers: 1. Cecil Street Lad resumed from a spell with a down the track effort at Randwick but will find this easier and is capable of improving. 8. Reigning King resumed with a sound second at Hawkesbury then followed it up with a fourth at Kembla Grange last time out when racing on the pace. He needs luck from the wide draw here but is worth place thought. 9. Princeston has run well in both runs back from a spell and has solid place claims in this.

How to play it: Troika EACH WAY.

Race 5 - 3:45PM HIP POCKET WORKWEAR & SAFETY CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

9. She’s Got Veuve had been racing well enough before breaking her maiden in good style when winning at Newcastle last time out. She sticks at the 1600m in this and has the advantage of gate one.

Dangers: 1. Anderson Bridge won at Hawkesbury when lining up for his third start then resumed from a spell with a midfield effort behind Cadetship at Rosehill in tougher grade than this. He is suited in this. 2. Highborn Harry hit the line well when second at Kembla Grange last time out and has the talent to give this a shake. 4. Aunty Rene broke her maiden when scoring at Goulburn last time out and before that she ran second to Canberra Guineas winner Xidaki on the Kensington track. That form looks good for a race like this.

How to play it: She’s Got Veuve WIN.

Race 6 - 4:20PM AIRPAK SHEET METAL BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

1. Beneficio was spelled after a last start second at Kembla Grange and while her city form before that was mixed, she has shown enough talent in her career to be rated a leading contender in a race like this.

Dangers: 8. Write This Way resumed with a Nowra win before leading and running well when a last start fourth at Canterbury. A repeat of that would have her in the finish of this. 10. Free Enterprise is better for two runs back from a spell and is ready to strike peak form now. 11. Full Revolution disappointed at Goulburn either side of a win at this track and a third at Muswellbrook.

How to play it: Beneficio WIN.

Race 7 - 5:00PM TITAN FINANCIAL SERVICES CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

13. Drama Dodger resumed with a Muswellbrook victory as an odds-on favourite and there’s no reason she can’t repeat the dose here.

Dangers: 7. Spirit Of Storm hasn’t been disgraced in her three starts since winning at Newcastle and is worth including among the main chances. 4. Tender Streak won here before being spelled and can improve on his resuming effort at Hawkesbury. 11. Stormy Revolution scored at Canberra at her second start before running fourth there last time out after leading.

How to play it: Drama Dodger WIN.

Race 8 - 5:40PM POLYTRACK PROVINCIAL-MIDWAY CHAMPIONSHIP QUAL. (1200 METRES)

2. Diamond Diesel is an ultra consistent type which had a Midway victory last year when had been racing consistently in that grade. Had a couple of runs in December when scored in succession at Canterbury and this track and has had a recent trial in preparation for this return to racing. Set for this and drawn ideally. Should be hard to hold out.

Dangers: 8. Shadows Of Love has a great record with five wins and three seconds fron just eight starts. Won in Midway grade at Rosehill late last year before scoring in metropolitan company at Kembla Grange then ran second to Lekvarte before having a freshen-up. Returned with a strong win at Rosehill and strips fitter for this. Drawn ideally and is one of the leading contenders. 15. Willinga Beast is a talented mare with only one win to her name from 13 starts but she has run well in some good grade races in her career. Is a dual group 2 placegetter and she comes into this on the back of a fifth to subsequent group 1 winner Lady Laguna on Magic Millions day and is capable of giving this a shake. 5. Karedada has a good record with four wins from six starts. Failed in a Midway at Randwick before bouncing back to winning form at Canterbury then being spelled. Has had two trials to prepare for this and should take plenty of beating if he runs up to his best form.

How to play it: Diamond Diesel EACH WAY.

Best Bets:
Race 2 (2) Divine Bene.
Race 5 (9) She’s Got Veuve.

Best Value:
Race 8 (2) Diamond Diesel.
