Payne Hoping Tympanist Strikes Right Chord In Swansong

By Ray Hickson

Trainer David Payne sees it as fitting that Tympanist will get the chance to go out on top at the track he’s been most successful when he has his swansong at Kensington on Wednesday.

Tympanist has won six races in 51 starts and five of them have come on Randwick’s inner track, the other was his Hawkesbury maiden win four years ago.

And if he can make is a sixth win in the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (2400m) it’ll be another masterful training performance from Payne as Tympanist’s last start was over 1550m.

His smart filly Shohisha handled a 500m jump in distance to win at Randwick last Saturday.

Payne said it’s the right time for the curtain to come down on Tympanist’s career.

“It’ll most probably be his last run, I’d like to retire him,” Payne said.

“He’s been good to me and if he can win that he can go out in a blaze of glory and then we’ll find a good home for him.”

The rising seven-year-old gelding’s last win was back in October, on the Kensington track of course, over 1800m but it’s still something of a mystery to Payne exactly why Tympanist likes the track so much.

“He just seems to love it, he’s won most of his races there,’’ he said.

“Maybe it’s just the going because it’s a little track and he’s a big horse.”

Tympanist, $19 with TAB on Tuesday, has had five starts in his current preparation and his best effort was his last start fourth at Canterbury where Payne said he found the line well.

They’ve been at 1550m, then twice at a mile, 1400m and last start 1500m again.

While it’s a large step up in distance and he hasn’t won beyond 1800m, Tympanist has been placed at 2200m and Payne is adamant the rise in trip won’t be an issue.

“He’s well, he ran fourth the other day running on and Canterbury doesn’t suit him,’’ he said.

“I think he will run it. He’s an older horse and he’s fit now, he’s already run over 2200m and run second.”

Stablemate Trafalgar Square is still chasing her second career win and Payne said she’s well suited in the Hellbent @ Yarraman Park Handicap (1400m).

The mare was placed in a Midway at Gosford a month ago before jumping to 1550m at Canterbury and beating two home.

Payne said it’s a matter of getting the timing right on Trafalgar Square and she can be in the finish.

Tympanist runs fourth at Canterbury on May 28

“At least she’s got a draw. She loomed up the other day and she has a very short run home, he made his run too far back,’’ he said.

“She looked like she was going to run into the money and she just weakened the last bit.”
