Maher Sends New Look Spywire On Rebuilding Mission

By Ray Hickson

A new look version of one time boom youngster Spywire will present at Rosehill on Saturday and there’s some positivity from the Ciaron Maher stable that he can get back on track.

Spywire won two of his first four starts, including a placing in Storm Boy’s Magic Millions, but he’s only raced twice in the past 12 months and returns as a gelding in the TAB Handicap (1100m).

Maher’s assistant trainer Johann Gerard-Dubord said his two trials show the three-year-old is heading in the right direction though warns he’s still open to improvement.

“He’s got some class, he’s very talented so he’ll run well,’’ he said.

“He’ll improve with the run there’s no doubt. He’s drawn well, he’ll get a good run, he’s matured a lot since his early days.

“He was very keen in his races and would just jump and run pretty much.

“As we saw in both his trials he relaxed well and trialled on the bridle. There’s nothing like race fitness, he’s still very wintry in his coat that’s why we’ve given him an extra week before going to the races after the trial so he can come on some more.”

Spywire, $7 with TAB on Friday, carries 59.5kg after the claim for Anna Roper and will be conceding 5kg and race fitness to stablemate Berezka who Gerard-Dubord says is capable of surprising.

The filly, a full sister to Nadal, was runner-up behind The Unique Star at Warwick Farm back on June 4.

“She has a very good turn of foot and I think she’s better on dry tracks,’’ he said.

“Her sectionals late were very good last start, she was probably too far back in the run to win.

“If you can find a race with good tempo and on a dry track, and it looks like we’ll get both, she can run a nice race.”

The Maher stable elected to wait an extra week after scratching Piggyback from Randwick last weekend and Gerard-Dubord has the fingers crossed she can be as effective on a drying track as she’s been on softer ground in two starts back.

After a first-up heavy track win she was narrowly beaten behind Shohisha in a blanket finish over the mile on June 7.

She was unplaced on good ground in three runs in the summer and the hope is that in the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1800m) on a winter good to soft track will be more forgiving.

“The thing about her is she just lacks that turn of foot which I think is why she is suited on tracks with a bit of give,’’ Gerard-Dubord said.

“It just takes a bit of sharpness out of the other ones. The 1800m is a good trip, she’ll get a good run, she’s going very well and it’s whether on a dry track if she is sharp enough when they quicken.”

Stablemate Federer was a bit one paced when he resumed with a midfield finish behind Thunderlips three weeks ago at 1400m and the rise in distance is expected to be in his favour.

The son of Jameka still received a positive report from Zac Lloyd after that first-up run.

“He said he raced like a horse that wants further and he’s obviously bred to run further,’’ he said.

Spywire runs third in a Warwick Farm trial on June 10

“He’s come on a lot since the run, his work has been very good, and I think we will see a massive improvement.”

Johann Gerard-Dubord on Glory Daze (race 9): “On the drier tracks they are a bit sharp, he’s a real grinder with a huge action and doesn’t have a turn of foot. There’s probably a couple of negatives but he’s done well between runs. Drawn out is better than in for him, as we dsaw last start he needs a bit of room and you’d rather cover some ground and get going whenever you want rather than being dictated like he was last start.”
