Neil Evans' Tips For Wyong Saturday (Provincial Championships)

By Neil Evans

Track improving to around Soft 7/Heavy 8 and true so on or near the speed early before trending wider on Provincial Championship Qualifying day

Race 1 MAIDEN PLATE (1600m):

Competitive mile to get us underway, and while a few are desperate to break through having gone close many times, the least experienced in the race is the one to beat. Promising 3YO gelding 4. Kinane should have nearly won after being held up and then flashing late resuming at Warwick Farm, and this looks an ideal journey second-up from a good trailing draw.

Dangers: Hand on heart a little, but 5YO Newcastle gelding 3. Urbino can start repaying punters. Ran a string of seconds through spring, often as an odds-on favourite before spelling, then returned with another second as a hot favourite at Taree. Staying at this trip second-up is the key. Be surprised if these two don't fight it out, but improving 4YO Randwick mare 6. Dame Margot looks well placed after not getting much luck and hitting the line hard second up at Hawkesbury in similar conditions.

How to play it: Kinane to win and quinella 3 and 4. Odds and Evens (First 2): Split

Race 2 CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (2100m):

After four runs this prep, 3YO Rosehill gelding 4. Sciconic looks well placed to claim a second win from a soft draw. Worked home okay in two provincial races over the mile before chasing home a tough stayer on Black Opal day in Canberra, and third horse then won a Class 1 next start.

Dangers: Newcastle filly and ex-Kiwi 5. Elisa Carolina hasn't done much in two runs since crossing the Tasman, but draws well, and will improve sharply with the blinkers on. Godolphin filly 7. Tahuna comes out of that same Gosford race behind Parry Sound when she failed to run, but previously had swept home to beat a strong maiden field at Gosford.

How to play it: Sciconic to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Sciconic runs second at Canberra on March 8

Race 3 MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

Very testing sprint for the maidens where early positions and cover will be critical. Was taken by the trial in heavy ground of debutant filly 14. Zanzidance (Deep Field x Dance Card by Exceed And Excel) from the Mark Newnham stable at Warwick Farm, surging home from off the speed with still plenty in the tank. Draws wide, but should be enough early speed underneath to slot in.

Dangers: Well bred Godolphin filly 8. Emanate stuck on after crossing over to lead from a wide gate on debut at Hawkesbury. Experience will count for plenty, but draws even wider here on a tighter track so will need to fly the machine. Big watch on colt 3. Deauville (Your Song x De Chorus by Unbridle's Song) from the Snowden yard at Randwick who showed nice improvement into his second trial, and debuts in blinkers from the inside draw.

How to play it: Zanzidance each way. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 4 2YO MAIDEN PLATE (1200m):

Always intriguing when the babies clash, with most on debut, and typically there's a stack of chances. Randwick filly 11. Only Mine from the Waterhouse-Bott stable at Randwick had a tough debut in the Group 3 Magic Night at Rosehill, but had previously trialled well, and much better suited here.

Dangers: Rival gelding 6. Spin That Wheel (Denman x Reiby Roulette by Casino Prince) has had three trials in three weeks, winning the latest, and is fit enough for long-awaited debut. Must include home track filly 12. Princess Betty who fought on hard after leading here on debut. Another local, colt 2. If You Say So (Wandjina x Elldarragh by Canny Lad) looks ready to debut off three forward trials, although was pushed out to win the most recent after stalking the speed. Warwick Farm filly 10. O'tartan Lass (Press Statement x Glasgow by Testa Rossa) from the Baker stable has won both trials, and looks a powerful type who will get over more ground, but drawn wide; while another Randwick-based filly 8. Celestial Doll (Star Witness x Pussycat Doll by Tale Of The Cat) has had two recent trials, and draws well for her debut with winkers on.

How to play it: Only Mine to win and first four 6,11,12/6,11,12/2,6,8,10,11,12/2,6,8,10,11,12. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 MAIDEN HCP (1350m):

It doesn't get a whole lot easier here over slightly longer trip. Warwick Farm 3YO gelding 1. Derbari draws to find a nice spot, and can improve sharply on an average debut at Kembla.

Dangers: Godolphin filly 4. Static dropped out in that same race behind Pioneer at Kembla, but blinkers have been quickly added; while 4YO Gosford gelding 6. Estroverto will appreciate more ground after a tidy resumption at Hawkesbury finishing only two lengths off a couple of handy ones.

How to play it: Derbari to win Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 CLASS 1 HCP (1350m):

Another big field and wide open contest. Keen on 3YO gelding 3. Destiny's Son third-up from the Mark Newnham yard at Randwick. Was a dominant all-the-way maiden winner resuming on the Beaumont track before looming to win this grade at Hawkesbury but just lost his way late. Will come over from a wider draw and either sit outside the leader, or just off the speed.

Dangers: Warwick Farm filly 4. Earth Song from the Waller stable resumes off a quiet trial, but draws the inside, and rattled home from the back at Newcastle to just miss first-up last prep. 7. Benfica Maid scraped home to win her maiden first-up in the heavy before outclassed at big odds in a Class 2 at Kembla behind promising Electric Girl who then won the Provincial C'ship qualifier next start. Better-placed company here third-up. Wyong 3YO gelding 6. All Over Magic has a claim third-up from a low draw coming out of that same Hawkesbury race as the top selection when only beaten three lengths; while include 3YO filly 12. Extreme Jewel in wider exotics first-up off a winning trial, and draws to get a sweet run a few lengths off the speed.

How to play it: Destiny's Son each way and first four 3,4,8/3,4,7,8/3,4,6,7,8,12/3,4,6,7,8,12. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 BM 70 HCP (1100m):

High class pressure sprint, with plenty of chances. Keen on progressive 3YO filly 8. Night Flyer second-up from the Hawkesbury yard of Brad Widdup. Was strong through the line resuming in a BM 64 on the Kensington track, and drops 3kg for this.

Dangers: Smart filly 1. Iconic Star from the Kris Lees stable at Newcastle has a strong winning record, and can head to town off another success. Has won three of four this prep, dominating all the way last start in a BM 78 at home clocked in smart time. Big watch on resuming rival Newcastle gelding 4. Rhythmic Pulse who draws the fence, trialled well and usually comes to hand quickly; while 4YO Warwick Farm mare 10. Joy And Mirth resumes off a couple of nice trials, and also fires early in the prep.

How to play it: Night Flyer to win and quinella 1 and 8. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 8 PROVINCIAL C'SHIP QUALIFIER (1350m):

Feature race of the day at Class 5 level is the fifth and final chance for three more runners to land the final spots in the Provincial final at Randwick on April 11. Keen on well bred 3YO and emerging stayer 11. Animate who drops in weight and comes back in trip from a smart BM 64 win at Gosford, but has been freshened up via a quiet trial, and should get the pace on here to charge over the top from the second half.

Dangers: Talented 4YO mare 14. Bubbles Ball is part of a big team from the Newcastle base of Kris Lees. Came off some consistent runs in strong metro grade to finish well in the Provincial Qualifier at Newcastle run in record time, and looks well in on the 54kg limit. Consistent 4YO Kembla mare 13. Miss Scorcher came off a big first-up run at Canterbury to be beaten narrowly in the Newcastle qualifier, and will push forward from a middle gate. Promising 4YO Newcastle gelding 9. Lifetime Quest looks one of the better weighted runners all meeting dropping 4.5kg from two close-up metro efforts up to BM 72 grade. The blinkers go on, but will still need the breaks drawn right off the track. Tough Newcastle 5YO 4. Juventus can peak here third-up after two tough assignments working home late first-up in a metro BM 88 before making some late ground in the Provincial qualifier at Kembla. Drawn better, but will need plenty of speed on up front. Watch the betting on 4YO local gelding 5. Celer who doesn't normally produce first-up, but looked sharp enough at the trials.

How to play it: Animate each way and trifecta 11,13,14/4,9,11,13,14/4,5,9,11,13,14. Odds and Evens: Split
