Neil Evans' Tips For Hawkesbury (Monday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail true so should play even early with gradual trend towards the middle.

Race 1 MAIDEN PLATE (2100m):

Always a poser with struggling maidens over a staying trip, but only bad luck stands in the way of Rosehill 3YO 6. Brilliant Mind who looks well placed to break his duck at seventh attempt. Was well backed when overhauled late this track on Provincial C'ship qualifying day, and drops in weight against a weaker bunch for longer assignment.

Dangers: Hard to fathom Kembla 4YO 2. Ephesian is still a maiden after 14 runs, having found the line in nearly every run this prep, including a close second at Nowra last start. Up in weight, but looking for extra trip. Local 6YO 1. Celebrator is as honest as they come having placed in 50 per cent of his 18 starts. Local filly 10. Rose Of War should have delivered much more by now, and form is only fair, but this is weaker than last few; while Randwick mare 9. Dominica Rose has been solid enough form in better quality races as well.

How to play it: Brilliant Mind to win and first four 6/1-2-9-10.

Brilliant Mind runs second at Hawkesbury on February 24

Race 2 MAIDEN HCP (1400m):

An open battle, but confident on the score of potential with local filly 5. Lily Istolat having only second start. After a trial win, debuted at big odds this track finishing hard from a long way back in a stronger maiden. Bred to get further so will run this right out again.

Dangers: Well bred Warwick Farm 3YO 6. Live The Moment showed enough resuming at Wyong this prep will be more rewarding than his first flop in the spring, and must be included. Randwick filly 9. Brunetta has had two solid runs back from a long spell in better company, and is ready to produce third-up.

How to play it: Lily Istolat each-way.

Race 3 MAIDEN PLATE (1100m):

Intriguing and tricky maiden at set weights with the half the field on debut! One of those is local filly 12. Shadow Ace (Testa Rossa x Shadow Card by Dane Shadow) who closed nicely under a hold in a recent home trial and top hoop jumps aboard.

Dangers: Rosehill filly 15. Bonanova's Dream debuted back in the spring and has had two nice trials ahead of return. Warwick Farm filly 11. Foliage (Lope De Vega x Callitris by Forestry) looks a natural and ready type after a forward trial. Of the raced brigade, Warwick Farm mare 8. Swizeler has been hard in the market all prep and improved into her third-up run; while box neighbour 7. Impurity has been up for a while, and generally around the money, but draws the outside gate.

How to play it: Shadow Ace each-way.

Race 4 BM 70 HCP (1100m):

Wyong 5YO 2. Phuket boasts a smart strike rate and only has to run up to his last two wins at Tamworth and Quirindi to take care of these. Form out of the BM 85 Lighting is good, and has carried this weight to convincingly win before.

Dangers: Local 3YO gelding 6. Cyclonite won first up convincingly last prep, and although second-up here off a nice return, normally holds form early in a prep. It's been a while between drinks for 6YO mare 4. Aimalac Millie, but this suits off some solid metro form, and gets in okay at the weights. Local 7YO 1. Legistation took on stronger last prep and resumes under a big weight, but has a good fresh record; while local 4YO 4. Dunatun hit the line nicely last two around this grade and should be in the finish.

How to play it: Phuket to win.

Phuket wins at Quirindi on February 15

Race 5 CL2 HCP (1100m):

Good race! Keen on Randwick colt 1. Chabreet fresh off two impressive trials. Was right on the back of Ball Of Muscle two trials back who beat dual Everest champion Redzel at Randwick on Saturday, and then closed strongly behind the smart Omar in latest trial. Has to lump a big weight fresh, but competed at Group 2 level in the spring.

Dangers: Godolphin filly 2. Decor looks the clear threat after giving nothing else a chance from the front in heavy ground at Gosford; while must give striking Rosehill 3YO 3. Vedder another chance after flopping as a heavily backed favourite resuming at Gosford when forced to do plenty of early work, and bolted in second-up last prep.

How to play it: Chabreet to win and box trifecta 1-2-3.

Race 6 CL1 HCP (1300m):

All aboard Warwick Farm colt 3. Morpheus in a suitable race with the claim for form rider. Stuck on well in a good BM 64 this track resuming, and only previous win was second-up.

Dangers: Warwick Farm-trained 2. Adonis Victorious resumed off a trial win to break his maiden at Gosford, but draws an awkward barrier; while Godolphin 3YO 1. Cloak will improve significantly second-up back on firm footing after resuming in a decent CL1 in heavy ground.

How to play it: Morpheus to win.

Race 7 CL1 HCP (1600m):

Randwick-based filly 4. Seewhatshebrings has ability and will keep improving as the distances get longer. Only just missed second-up this track, and capable of winning better races. Maps to finish over the top.

Dangers: Improving filly 2. Onthetake looks well placed third-up after hitting the line hard this track in a BM 64, although inside draw not always advantageous late in the day.

How to play it: Seewhatshebrings to win and quinella 2 and 4.
