Smith & Gibbons Winning Double Looms At Wyong (Thurs)

By Gary Harley

The combination of Warwick Farm trainer Matthew Smith and Newcastle apprentice Dylan Gibbons is enjoying a run of success and the pair could be in the winner’s circle at Thursday’s Wyong race meeting. On November 13, Gibbons in only his second year as an apprentice steered home Smith's three-year-old filly Festival Dancer to an easy victory in the Group 3 Spring Stakes at Newcastle.

The pair combine with two gallopers at Wyong and both have winning prospects. New Zealand filly Seven Twenty ($4.20 favourite on TAB) will contest the Stand Up Against Domestic and Family Abuse Class 1 Handicap (1350m) and she has the best chance of the Smith-Gibbons runners.

In her first Australian start, Seven Twenty bolted in with a Goulburn maiden. In her only other Australian start on October 16 the filly ran on well when fourth in a good Newcastle Class 1.

Chameleon Choice ($5.50) trained by Smith and ridden by Gibbons will run in the opening event, the 1800Respect Maiden Plate (1100m). The colt finished a close third on debut at Flemington in January. He was then unplaced behind Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside at Randwick before a spell, has trialled well and is pretty quick.

RACE 1, 1800RESPECT MAIDEN PLATE, 1000M: Miss Maz ($5) is a speedy filly which has been placed in both starts this prep. First-up on October 12 she was run down late over 900m at Newcastle. Last start at Kembla the filly led and was beaten a length. She has the rails barrier. Chameleon Choice ($5.50) resumes and he is a Flemington placegetter and One Way Street ($4) has trialled well.
SELECTIONS: 6 MISS MAZ, 4 CHAMELEON CHOICE, 1 ONE WAY STREET

RACE 2, MOUNTIES GROUP MAIDEN PLATE, 1600M: Miss Delia ($2.90) put the writing on the wall when a close third in a Randwick maiden. The mare came from a long way back over 1400m and she is crying out for the mile. She has drawn well and should be at her top third-up. Bedford Square ($1.75 fav) has been placed in six of her nine starts and went well first-up. Tailoring ($6) will be fitter for the first-up run.
SELECTIONS: 8 MISS DELIA, 7 BEDFORD SQUARE, 5 TAILORING

RACE 3, #NO EXCUSE FOR ABUSE MAIDEN HANDICAP, 1350M: Stay Wealthy ($2.80) has genuine speed and has been runner-up in both starts on this track. He was narrowly beaten on the track after his breast plate broke on the home turn. He has a 2kg claim and will be hard to run down. Gin Martini ($2.70 fav) was placed in a Rosehill Group 3 in April and she has had two recent trials. Too Much Lippy ($4) was narrowly beaten only start at Goulburn in March.
SELECTIONS: 1 STAY WEALTHY, 2 GIN MARTINI, 4 TOO MUCH LIPPY

RACE 4, STAND UP AGAINST DOMESTIC AND FAMILY ABUSE CLASS 1, 1350M: Seven Twenty ($4.20 fav) was a close fourth in a very strong Newcastle Class 1 on October 16. First-up from New Zealand she bolted in at Goulburn in August. She has a lovely barrier and has a 2kg claim. Cushy ($5) was impressive winning a maiden on this track on November 6. Niffler ($5) hasn’t raced since a Kembla win in April but won a recent trial.
SELECTIONS: 2 SEVEN TWENTY, 6 CUSHY, 7 NIFFLER

RACE 5, WYONG MAGIC MILLIONS WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 15 MDN HCP, 1100M: Hypnosis ($2.90 fav) was run down late at Hawkesbury last start. He was placed first-up at Nowra after leading. He has been placed in four of five starts and has drawn perfectly. Kyalla ($3.20) bogged down on a heavy track in her only start in July. Mister Ripley ($10) has been placed nine times.
SELECTIONS: 1 HYPNOSIS, 5 KYALLA, 10 MISTER RIPLEY

RACE 6, DOMESTIC AND FAMILY ABUSE AWARENESS BM64 HANDICAP, 1100M: The Godolphin filly Glittery ($6.50) has not raced since a Gosford win in June. She has had two trials and her form last prep was good enough. Jason Collett has the mount and she has drawn okay. Never Second ($2.60 fav) resumes after a quiet trial and Dual Escape ($9.50) loves this track.
SELECTIONS: 9 GLITTERY, 4 NEVER SECOND, 6 DUAL ESCAPE

RACE 7, WYONG’S NEXT RACE MEETING THURSDAY DECEMBER 9 BM 64 HANDICAP, 1600M: Buba ($2.90 fav) was an easy Hawkesbury winner two starts back on November 4. She has been placed in two starts on this track and has won three of five on heavy tracks. Carolina Fire ($3.90) is in good form and Tim’s Principal ($10) is capable.
SELECTIONS: 2 BUBA, 7 CAROLINA FIRE, 1 TIM’S PRINCIPAL
