Hat-Trick Looms For Promising Newnham Stayer At Wyong

By Gary Harley

The Carlton Draught Wyong Cup Prelude (2100m) is one of the feature races on the eight-race Wyong program on Sunday. Mark Newnham’s promising stayer Malfy ($3.10 favourite on TAB) is chasing a hat-trick of wins in the Prelude as she steps up to the 2100m trip for the first time.

Newnham has booked his Irish apprentice Tom Sherry to ride the mare and he will claim 1½kg. Two starts back Malfy finished strongly to win a 1600m Wyong maiden on a heavy 8 track. Last start on August 20 the four-year-old bolted in by four lengths in an 1800m Hawkesbury Class 1. Prince Of Arragon ($9) is a major threat after recent placings at Newcastle and Gosford.

RACE 1, COCA-COLA CLASS 1 HANDICAP, 1600M: She’s Fearless ($3.70) will appreciate the longer trip after two creditable runs this time in. The mare had solid New Zealand form earlier this year and in her first Australian start at Warwick Farm in March she had no luck when beaten four lengths. Rockness Angel ($2.80 fav) has good country form and Grand Acheeva ($10) just missed last start.
SELECTIONS: 2 SHE’S FEARLESS, 7 ROCKNESS ANGEL, 8 GRAND ACHEEVA

RACE 2, TAB.COM.AU PROV & MAIDEN COUNTRY PLATE, 1600M: The well-bred Stark ($3.20 fav) can break through in his fourth start. The entire was runner-up at Wyong on debut in July and was only beaten 2¼ lengths in a strong Newcastle maiden last Saturday. The colt will appreciate the 1600m. Alanton’s Treaty ($5) and Montana Thunder ($9.50) have each-way chances.
SELECTIONS: 6 STARK, 9 ALANTON’S TREATY, 4 MONTANA THUNDER

RACE 3, TRACSIDE AUTOMOTIVE MAIDEN HANDICAP, 1100M: Kiss And Tell ($4.20) deserves a change of luck after placings in six of her nine starts. She has been runner-up in her past three starts at Hawkesbury, Newcastle and Gosford. The mare has the rails barrier and races on the speed. Oslo ($3.10) resumes but is trialling well and Numbers Game ($2.70 fav) is on debut after a trial win.
SELECTIONS: 2 KISS AND TELL, 1 OSLO, 3 NUMBERS GAME

RACE 4, TEAM THOROUGHBRED NSW MAIDEN PLATE, 1200M: Elizabeel ($3.20 fav) has outstanding metropolitan form for a Provincial maiden. The filly has placed in three of four starts on city tracks. On May 9 Elizabeel was only beaten two lengths by crack youngster Peltzer at Randwick. First-up recently at Canterbury, she was runner-up in a much stronger field than this. Wuddacuddashudda ($6) was a close second on debut at Newcastle and Grenado ($8.50) went okay when placed at Warwick Farm recently.
SELECTIONS: 9 ELIZABEEL, 6 WUDDACUDDASHUDDA, 3 GRENDO

RACE 5, WYONG RACE CLUB LA GIOCONDA, 1600M: Hard Lady ($5) is good value here after a fast-finishing fourth less than two lengths from the winner at Newcastle last Saturday. The mare has raced well in better company and Avdulla has the mount. Our Winnie ($4.20) hasn’t been far away in two Canterbury starts recently and she is the class runner. Local mare Ondo Pasa ($5) races well here and has a chance.
SELECTIONS: 5 HARD LADY, OUR WINNIE, 3 ONDO PASA

RACE 6, CARLTON DRAUGHT WYONG CUP PRELUDE, 2100M: Malfy ($3.10 fav) is a lightly raced promising stayer chasing a hat-trick of wins. The mare has won her past two starts in good style at Wyong and Hawkesbury and she is bred to run 2100m. Prince Of Arragon ($9) has been placed at Newcastle and Gosford recently while Frenzied ($4.60) wasn’t far away at Newcastle last start.
SELECTIONS: 5 MALFY, 7 PRINCE OF ARRAGON, 1 FRENZIED

RACE 7, DE BORTOLI WINES B/M 64, 1000M: Miss Fox ($3.20 fav) was scratched at Scone on Tuesday to run here and will test these. She has had four starts for three wins and a second. Prior to a spell the mare won well at Gosford and she won a recent trial. Archery Butts ($3.30) comes off a smart trial win and she is very fast. Galaxial ($8.50) is first-up after two trials.
SELECTIONS: 2 MISS FOX, 3 ARCHERY BUTTS, 10 GALAXIAL

RACE 8, WYONG’S NEXT RACE DAY SEPT 4 B/M 64, 1350M: Cultural Amnesia ($4.20 fav) resumes and the colt is pretty smart. He won a Kensington 2YO maiden in March and was only beaten a head by Thermosphere. The colt was an easy winner of a recent trial. Dominus ($6.50) is ready to win and Ruby Tuesday ($5.50) is capable.
SELECTIONS: 5 CULTURAL AMNESIA, 6 DOMINUS, 9 RUBY TUESDAY
