Trainer Has Found The Key To Bonus Tempus (Kembla, Sat)

Bonus Tempus took trainer Brett Lazzarini a few preparations to work out but he's hoping the gelding is now ready to deliver a hard earned second win at Kembla Grange on Saturday.

The son of Impending has finished a narrow second at his past three starts and gets the chance to go one better in the Jamie Russell Class 1 Handicap (1300m).

Bonus Tempus ($17 on TAB) only has one win from 28 starts but only missed by less than a length at his past three runs at Taree and Wyong (twice).

"It has taken a few preparations to get the key to him because he's a funny little horse," Lazzarini said.

"He looks like he will want more ground when you look at his racing pattern but we've kept him on the fresh side and at 1400m.

"We do little with him between races and let him race to keep him fit that way. It means you can back him up but we keep him on the fresh side and swimming. It suits him and he is sprinting well."

Blake Spriggs is back riding in NSW and will take the steer on Bonus Tempus.

Lazzarini will also launch a two-pronged attack with I'm A Chocoholic ($71) and Flame Of Fire ($34).

I'm A Chocoholic is returning for her second preparation after failing to finish among the placings in four starts in December and January.

The daughter of Santos has been a work in progress but Lazzarini is confident she's starting to put it all together: "She has been a real handful," he said.

"I ride her in all her work and she has thrown herself on the ground about seven or eight times and been through four fences.

"This time in she has behaved herself and I think she can run a race at odds. My horses are never fully wound up first-up but she will improve sharply on what she does."

Flame Of Fire is a three-year-old colt by Australian Guineas winner Grunt and has been given a pair of trials to prepare for his debut. The three-year-old has been set a tricky task on debut with 3kg claimer Olivia Chambers forced to navigate a path from barrier 11.

"Flame Of Fire goes very well but I think the wide alley won't suit him," Lazzarini said. "He will probably knock up and I expect he will probably finish midfield on lack of experience with raceday nerves and all the rest of it."

Lazzarini will be in Adelaide over the weekend with Steel Blaze ($26) in the Group 3-Chairman's Stakes (2000m) while Life Coach ($151) is in the Group 2-Tobin Bronze Stakes (1200m).
