Talented O'Shea Duo Will Feature On Thursday's Wyong Program

By Gary Harley

John O’Shea will send two promising three-year-olds to Thursday's Wyong meeting, one of which is a potential Qld Oaks contender. Awesome Wonder ($1.55 favourite on TAB), a daughter of the great European sire Galileo, will contest the Coca-Cola Europacific Partners & Arcade Trader Class 1 and Maiden Plate (2000m).

She will be an odds-on favourite following an outstanding Australian debut on a heavy 10 track at Wyong on April 28. It was a 1600m maiden and Willie Pike allowed her to drop out to last in a field of eight. The filly raced keen early but tailed the field to near the home turn where she got on the back of horses going forward. Pike took Awesome Wonder to the outside of the field at the top of the straight and she unwound for an impressive win.

On Thursday, the Irish-bred filly steps up to a more suitable trip and Tommy Berry has the mount. There was talk of a Qld Oaks campaign after the win and another victory on Thursday should see her heading across the border.

O’Shea will be represented by another short-priced favourite at Wyong when he saddles up the in form Kiwi bred Duke Of Gordon ($1.95 fav) in the Daily Press & Carlton & United Breweries Benchmark 64 Handicap (1600m). The gelding is on a hat-trick after his wins at the past two Wyong meetings by margins of 4.21 and 1.48 lengths. Reece Jones, who is on loan to O’Shea, replaces Pike who is not riding at the meeting.

The Snowden stable has a number of runners at Wyong and Secret Revolution ($2.30 fav) in the Bellbirds & Central Coast Volunteer Rescue 2YO Maiden (1100m) is their best chance. Newcastle trained Xpresso ($3.10 fav), a brilliant first-up winner at Gosford, is the one to beat in the final event the Wyong Roos Class 1 Handicap (1200m).

RACE 1, WYONG’S NEXT RACE MEETING JUNE 2 MAIDEN, 1350M: This is an open race with many chances. Dubai Showgirl ($2.90 fav) has been placed at Newcastle and Kembla recently but by lengthy margins. However, the two races were much stronger than this one. Dubai Showgirl has led in her past two starts. First starter Willinga Rufio ($5) should run well while Uncaged ($3.70) can improve.
SELECTIONS: 8 DUBAI SHOWGIRL, 1 WILLINGA RUFIO, 6 UNCAGED

RACE 2, THE BELLBIRDS & CENTRAL COAST VOLUNTEER RESCUE 2YO MAIDEN PLATE, 1100M: Secret Revolution ($2.30 fav) was beaten 4½ lengths by the Golden Slipper winner on New Year's Day and he resumes here after an impressive barrier trial win. He has been gelded since his best run and he has the speed to race on the pace from his soft draw. Tommy Berry has the mount. Economics ($4.20) went well on debut at Muswellbrook recently while Hawaii Five Oh ($6) has trialled okay.
SELECTIONS: 5 SECRET REVOLUTION, 3 ECONOMICS, 4 HAWAII FIVE OH

RACE 3, WE CARE CONNECT & CENTRAL COAST KIDS IN NEED 2YO, 1100M: Kris Lees's unraced filly Lucky Variety ($3.40 fav) makes her debut after a very impressive trial win on Newcastle’s Beaumont Track. In the trial on April 26 she was trapped four-wide with no cover midfield before cruising down the outside to win hard held. Tim Clark has picked up the mount. Controlocracy ($6.50) resumes here and both recent trials have been okay. Silentsar ($4) was a distant third in his only start at Warwick Farm.
SELECTIONS: 8 LUCKY VARIETY, 7 CONTROLOCRACY, 5 SILENTSAR

RACE 4, ACCOLADE WINES MAIDEN HANDICAP, 1100M: Glacier Queen ($2 fav) is a standout in this race. Her only two starts were in December when she was placed at Newcastle both times. She led all the way to win a recent Warwick Farm trial hard held. Tikitiboo ($9) led most of the way when a close third on this track on debut and Not That Easy ($9) finished fourth here in her only start.
SELECTIONS: 1 GLACIER QUEEN, 4 TIKITIBOO, 2 NOT THAT EASY

RACE 5, NESTLE PROFESSIONAL MAIDEN HANDICAP, 1100M: Diamond Flare ($2.70 fav) bolted in by 5½ lengths in a recent Randwick trial. He finished fifth behind In The Congo in his only start on the Kensington Track in May last year. He has been gelded since and is bred to swim. Conspiracist ($3.40) is a first starter which has won two trials and has speed. Fielding ($6) has been placed in all three starts.
SELECTIONS: 4 DIAMOND FLARE, 3 CONSPIRACIST, 2 FIELDING

RACE 6, COCA-COLA EUROPACIFIC PARTNERS & ARCADE TRADER CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE, 2000M: Irish Import Awesome Wonder ($1.55 fav) is on trial for the Queensland Oaks when she runs in this race. In her first Australian start on this track two weeks ago, the filly came from last to win 1600m maiden. She will appreciate the longer trip and a heavy track won’t be a problem. Thailand ($4.40) was tough when runner-up at Newcastle last start. Vandelay Style ($7.50) was placed at Kembla last start.
SELECTIONS: 6 AWESOME WONDER, 3 THAILAND, 10 VANDELAY STYLE

RACE 7, DAILY PRESS & CARLTON & UNITED BREWERIES BM 64, 1600M: Duke Of Gordon ($1.95 fav) is chasing a hat-trick after two easy wins on this track. Both wins were on heavy 10 tracks and he runs a very strong mile. Reece Jones has the mount replacing Willie Pike who is not riding at the meeting. Alastor ($17) is a winner here and has won a heavy track and Star Sparks ($5) won two on the trot last prep.
SELECTIONS: 2 DUKE OF GORDON, 5 ALASTOR, 1 STAR SPARKS

RACE 8, REGNIS REFRIGERATION & SONS BENCHMARK 64, 1350M: Podium ($2.40 fav) bolted in at Newcastle first-up recently. He has very good metropolitan form last prep, which included placings at Rosehill and Warwick Farm. He races on the pace and from the rails barrier he should box seat. Miss Scalini ($12) is first-up after three placings before a spell. Bob’s Your Uncle ($8.50) has a place chance.
SELECTIONS: 2 PODIUM, 5 MISS SCALINI, 7 BOBS YOUR UNCLE

RACE 9, WYONG ROOS FOUNDATION CLASS 1, 1200M: Xpresso ($3.10 fav) is a talented 3yo that bolted in by more than 3 lengths first-up for his new trainer at Gosford recently. He is an on-pacer which was narrowly beaten in his only start at Newcastle in July last year. His win was on a heavy 9 track. Irish Kisses ($5) just missed first-up here last meeting and has a chance. One Way Street ($10) is quick and could prove hard to run down.
SELECTIONS: 1 XPRESSO, 9 IRISH KISSES, 2 ONE WAY STREET
