Sydney's Golden Glow As $10m Eagle Lands At Royal Randwick

The emerging superstar of Sydney racing along with Australia’s best four-year-old horses taking on international raiders all come together for the seventh edition of the $10 million Golden Eagle, run for the first time at Royal Randwick.

Sydney’s second richest race – one of the most innovative and charitable racedays in the world – will also be at the heart of a day where singles converge on Saturday to meet at the inaugural Golden Mingle.

Ten per cent of all prizemoney earned by each runner will be donated to charity. A full list of each runner’s charity is HERE

The unbeaten Autumn Glow for champion trainer and jockey duo Chris Waller and James McDonald is the $2.15 TAB favourite in the $10m Golden Eagle, a race which has quickly gained international attention.

Japan’s Panja Tower, trained by Shinsuke Hashiguchi and with jockey Kohei Matsuyama, is at $6.50 while the UK’s Seagulls Eleven for the Hugo Palmer stable and jockey Tom Marquand is at $26.

International runners have won the past two renewals of the Golden Eagle.

Australian Turf Club Head of Racing and Wagering, Nevesh Ramdhani said the Golden Eagle had become one of the best form races in world racing.

“The [$10 million] Golden Eagle has quickly grown in stature as one of the strongest races in international racing, targeted by some of the biggest stables and owners across the globe," Mr Ramdhani said.

“This year’s field features Australia’s best four-year-olds headlined by an unbeaten mare who is among the most popular horses in Sydney, along with our champion jockey and trainer combination.

“The Sydney Everest Carnival has been the most successful yet and the Golden Eagle coming to Royal Randwick takes it to a new level."

The John O’Shea & Tom Charlton-trained Linebacker, with Zac Lloyd aboard, is at $6 and strengthens the Aussie assault against the internationals.

Evaporate trained by Ben, Will & JD Hayes with Tyler Schiller to ride is at $10 as the Victorians target the Sydney spring, and look to be a third stable from down south to win the Golden Eagle.

An outstanding field of sprinters have accepted in the $3m Russell Balding Stakes – two weeks after the $20m TAB Everest and the final leg of the Sydney Spring Sprint Series.

Jimmysstar – who ran third in the TAB Everest for Ciaron Maher and Ethan Brown – is the early $3-$2.80 favourite in the race ahead of Lady Shenandoah (Waller/McDonald) $4.60-$5.50 after her seventh placing in the TAB Everest.

Briasa (Hawkes Racing/Schiller-$6) and War Machine (Ben-Will-JD Hayes/Tim Clark-$8.50) are also backing up from the TAB Everest.

The $750,000 Gr 3-Rosehill Gold Cup adds further features to Saturday’s 10-race card with a field of 16 runners, headed in TAB markets at $2.90 by Wootton Verdi for Chris Waller and James McDonald.
