Punters' Pal - Jason Collett (Rosehill 11th August)

By Ray Hickson

He has one of those books of rides that could easily spring up a few winners, so here's nothing but quotes from jockey Jason Collett about his eight rides at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Nicci’s Gold (Race 2, $3.70 TAB). Last start 6th over 1800m to Letter To Juliette at Randwick, August 4:

“The 2000m is a question mark, she wasn’t fully tested over the 1800m last week but she felt like she had something to give and I think she would have tested the winner had she got out.

“She had something to give but she didn’t have an explosive finish. She has a very good turn of foot over the 1400m and it wasn’t as sharp over 1800m but the speed in the race I thought was only moderate.

“I’m not concerned about when I get in the clear, she’s going to get a soft run from the gate and is going to be ready to strike.’’

Nicci's Gold runs an unlucky sixth at Randwick on August 4

Travancore (Race 3, $10). Last start 2nd to Kaonic over 1400m at Randwick, Julu 21:

“It was a bit lucky for the winner that he got the breaks when he did but unlucky for us. He put himself a bit handier the other day, which he hasn’t done a lot in his career, and didn’t have as much ground to make up.

“The barrier could dictate where we are going to be. He can be tardy away from the barriers but he’s been a bit better this preparation. His form is stacking up fine, Kaonic is a serious racehorse.’’

All Too Soon (Race 4, $18). Last start 13th in G1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m), Rosehill March 31:

“She was on track for the Oaks before her last run. She’s a classy mare and she hasn’t trialled so you’ll get a good idea from how she looks in the yard about how forward she is.’’

Sir Plush (Race 5, $19). Last start 5th to Tactical Advantage over 1100m at Randwick, July 21:

“He drew wide and ended up going back and we gave away some cheap lengths early. He was well and truly beaten by Tactical Advantage but his sectionals late were really good (11.71 last 200m from Punters Intel).

“I’d be more confident if we had a better draw where he could just land in behind the speed but the barrier can make it a bit tricky.’’

Golden Tycoon (Race 6, $13). Last start 1st over 1200m at Canterbury on July 25:

“He was very impressive and still very raw. He did things wrong during the race and he still has more to learn which is good.

“The intention will be to come out positive, he’s up in class and there will be runners who will be able to match him for speed. It’ll be a matter of how he comes out from the barriers.

Jockey Jason Collett (Pic: Steve Hart).

“I would say he’s not a one trick pony. He is going back 100m and stepping up in class and if he didn’t have the speed it wouldn’t hurt him to take a sit.’’

Harper’s Choice (Race 7, $5). Last start 1st over 2400m at Rosehill on June 30:

“This looks a nice race for him. He races near the speed and makes his own luck. I was happy with his trial on Tuesday, Gerald was using the trial more as a gallop for him.

“I think he’s best suited over the ten furlongs (2000m) as opposed to the 12.’’

Embley (Race 8, $51). Last start 11th to Tactical Advantage over 1100m at Randwick on July 21:

“His first-up run was over 1100m in a good race so distance wise it wasn’t suitable. Back up to 1400m he has a chance to improve.’’

He’s A Given (Race 9, $34). Last start 8th over 1550m at Canterbury on July 25:

“He’s out of his grade a bit. If it was a wet track you’d say he’s some chance but on the dry he might find it a bit tough.’’
