Friday Focus - A Snapshot Of Saturday Racing

By Nick Berney

ROSEHILL GARDENS – BEST BET: Race 6 # 8 – JAMBALAYA

He's returned improved in his second preparation and produced a career peak figure first-up at Randwick. The gelding had the pace/bias against, sprinted the second-fastest 400m-200m split of the meeting and maintained a strong finishing speed to the line to finish third. Further, the late market trade suggested he needed the run, and the form out of that race has since been confirmed with a subsequent winner. The Godolphin galloper is much more suited to racing with cover; although he is drawn wide, he can make his run in the anticipated best ground, and he has the best closing speed figure in this field.

ROSEHILL GARDENS – NEXT BEST: Race 5 # 4 – AFRICAN DAISY

She is a consistent type and was brave in defeat first-up at Warwick Farm in a high-rating race. The mare always faced the breeze at a fast pace and went down fighting to hold second, with her late splits suggesting she could only improve off that performance. Her ratings pattern says she will step off that effort, maps to have all favours, and Nash Rawiller sticks. In addition, she is fresh for this where some of her irrvals have been racing on extremely testing tracks in recent weeks.

ROSEHILL GARDENS – SECTIONAL STAR: Race 4 # 4 – UNANIMOUS

He's ready to peak third-up stepping out to a more suitable trip, and his last start had hidden merit. The gelding had to make his run through the inferior ground, and Punter's Intelligence clocked him running the race's quickest 600m-400m split in 11.88. Further, he peaked on effort, indicating he was looking for more ground and now has the platform to improve. The rise to 1800m is ideal, allowing him to settle closer, and all his peak figures have come on rain-affected ground.

NEWCASTLE – PROVINCIAL PICK: Race 5 # 11 – FAKHRA

Happy to stick with him after last week's scratching. The import resumes after a 112-day break and is ready to run well after two trials, giving him a solid platform. He is in his second prep under the guidance of Chris Waller, and he brings solid form lines from last campaign around the likes of Group 2 subsequent winner Wymark. The gelding has a strong ratings profile relative to his rivals, and he maps to have all the favours.
