Canterbury Winners - Tips For Wednesday 9th June

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Wednesday’s Canterbury meeting. Selections based on a soft to heavy track.

Race 1 – 12:55PM BLUE POINT @ DARLEY HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

3. Dragonstone is a very interesting debutant and his fast closing second in a Rosehill trial last month suggests he has plenty of talent. Probably settles off the pace but if he shows the dash he did in the trial he’ll be hard to hold out.

Dangers: 5. Authentic Jewel made her debut for Chris Waller in the Gimcrack and ran a solid fourth, she’s now with Brad Widdup and wasn’t far off Mura Mura in her latest trial. One to keep safe. 6. Celtic Harp had some support at odds when he debuted at Warwick Farm a month ago but faded after leading. Trial since was wound and with James McDonald riding he’s worth some thought. 11. Fangirl is well bred and fitter for two trials without being a real standout in them. Betting a pointer.

How to play it: Dragonstone WIN ($2.70 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Dragonstone runs second in a Rosehill trial on May 21

Race 2 – 1.30PM VINERY STUD PLATE (1100 METRES)

2. Ibaraki has taken some time to make it to the track but he has looked super impressive winning his trials both back in December and more recently. Shown some tactical ability in the trials, both on soft ground, and if he runs up to them he will take beating.

Dangers: 5. Texcel hit the line hard to place here two runs back before going around in the Magic Millions maiden. Fitter for two trials and if there’s support he can go close. 1. Chalkley will be big odds likely but he’s fought on quite well at his last two runs at the provincials including a narrow defeat on a soft 7 at Kembla two runs ago. Drawn one and might give some cheek. 7. Preemptory drifted well back on debut at Kensington and made a little late ground to finish midfield in a good form race. Wouldn’t surprise if he improves on that in a race that looks to have less depth.

How to play it: Ibaraki WIN ($1.80 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Race 3 – 2:05PM XXXX PLATE (1250 METRES)

6. Allinthistogether is going to excel over more ground in time but she’s shown plenty of talent in her trials and there was a lot to like about her turn of foot in winning her latest at Randwick. She’ll be strong late and is a good chance on debut. Read trainer Mark Newnham's comments here.

Dangers: 4. Silly Point has been competitive in three starts in Victoria, all on good tracks, and is fitter for a close second in a Rosehill trial last week. If he handles the going he should be in the finish somewhere. 1. Barrichello made an even debut a month ago on a heavy track and has been back to the trials finishing fourth behind Ibaraki. Improvement likely. 9. Zariya will appreciate the extra distance after a debut third at Nowra over 1100m on a soft 7. She was a drifter there so should have upside and could surprise.

How to play it: Allinthistogether WIN ($3.30 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: EVENS.

Allinthistogether wins a trial at Randwick on May 28

Race 4 – 2.40PM ROBRICK LODGE HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

5. Miss Fox could be a big improver second-up after not having the best of luck when resuming at Kensington a few weeks ago. She relishes wet tracks, has the blinkers on and is versatile. Expect her to run well.

Dangers: 7. Irish Angel hasn’t raced since breaking through at Kensington back in March but she does race well here and on a wet track. Yet to win first-up, that’s the main query with the price on offer but gate one and J-Mac are advantages. Must respect. 3. Turnstyle gave nothing else a chance on a heavy track at Warwick Farm two runs back then poor when up in class at Rosehill and failing to beat one home. Quiet trial since, draws to be prominent and on a wet track could rebound. 4. Calescent gave a big sight when narrowly beaten on a heavy track here two runs back before an even third on the synthetic at Canberra. Can show up.

How to play it: Miss Fox E/W ($5.50 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Race 5 – 3:15PM CHINA HORSE CLUB HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

D-Day for 5. Fastconi who has placed in all three runs this time in and arrives here with blinkers first time. Narrowly beaten on a heavy two starts ago, had his chance last time but back on wet ground, three rivals and with the shades he’s entitled to take beating.

Dangers: 6. Stoical was too good as favourite scoring at Hawkesbury first-up. Faces a similar scenario to last prep where he came off a fresh win to a metro race and was a beaten favourite, yet to race on a wet track so interesting to see what he produces this time. 2. El Cohete was chasing all the way first-up at Rosehill and didn't do a bad job all things considered. He'll be fitter, he's unbeaten second-up and this looks easier. So he can improve. 3. Invincible Lad failed on a heavy track at Warwick Farm a month ago then better effort last week on a good surface. Small field so has a show.

How to play it: Fastconi WIN ($2.15 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Fastconi runs second at Canterbury on May 26

Race 6 – 3:50PM RANVET HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

8. Wild Chap isn’t the worst here on a wet track. He likes to get out in front, or at least on the pace, and has given a good show at his last couple of wet tracks. Gets down to 52kg for an in-form apprentice and has the chance to run a bold race.

Dangers: 9. Canadian Spice had a sweet run in front and was able to hold them off to win over this course against the mares two weeks ago. Same weight here, not sure she’ll get a picnic this time but isn’t one-dimensional. Good chance. 5. Titanium Power is racing well and seems to handle all conditions. Comfortable winner as favourite at Hawkesbury before a solid third at Warwick Farm last week. With even luck from the barrier he’s in the mix. 3. Dylan's Romance can bob up now and then and generally gets through a wet track. If he finds the lead he could take some running down.

How to play it: Wild Chap E/W ($4.00 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Wild Chap runs second at Kembla Grange on May 25

Race 7 – 4:25PM TAB HANDICAP (1900 METRES)

17. Squanto was brilliant winning three back at Wyong then not suited there at his next start. Far from disgraced in a similar race to this two weeks ago, doesn’t mind it wet and no surprise to see him figure at each-way odds.

Dangers: 9. Rules Don’t Apply can mix her form but comes through the same race as Squanto finishing fourth after enjoying a reasonable run. Drops 4.5kg and handles a wet track. Each-way claims. 16. Sir Aglovale comes through the same race, he settled well back and made a bit of ground late down the outside. Closer to peak after two runs back, draws better and has blinkers on. Likely improver. 2. Montserrat comes down 4kg after leading and holding on for second in the same even two weeks ago. Will roll forward as usual and capable of being in the finish.

How to play it: Squanto E/W ($8.00 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Squanto runs fifth at Canterbury on May 26
