Wyong Winners - Tips For Sunday 23rd September

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Sunday’s meeting at Wyong. Selections based on a Good track.

Race 1 – 1:00PM ROILY AND BOOTHY FOR SMEETHY PLATE (1350 METRES)

3. Soir De Lune will be winning a race this preparation. Showed promise in his first campaign including on debut at this track, despite being a beaten favourite. He’s trialled well on two occasions and is sure to run well..

Dangers: 4. Starvino will probably lead this field if his first two starts are a guide though he’s been safely reeled in on both occasions. Given a decent test out to win his second trial this prep at Gosford by six lengths. If he’s a bit stronger at the finish this prep he can take some catching. 7. Jarhead was in trouble early at his debut and didn’t recover, beating just a couple home at Hawkesbury a month ago. He won the trial Soir De Lune contested at Rosehill and it wouldn’t surprise to see him improve sharply. 5. Lamplight Lili has the blinkers on first time here and her last couple of runs haven't been bad so if they spark some improvement she could be in the finish.

How to play it: Soir De Lune WIN ($3.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 2 - 1:40PM JIMMY JURD FOR SMEETHY HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

Expecting a big improvement from 3. Miss Moana on what she showed at Newcastle at her second start off a six week break. She reared as the gates opened and settled well back, was never in the hunt at all and it struck me as a forgive run. Go back to her debut and she charged to the line, running the fastest last 200m of 11.84 (Punters Intel), like a horse that will excel at a mile or more and she has that here plus the blinkers on. Hard to beat.

Dangers: 2. Into The Oblivion ran his best race at start four when he resumed over 1400m at Newcastle and he was right in contention until the last 50m. Fitter for that and he had support at odds fresh so he’s obviously come back well. Must consider. 1. Pyro has had his chance for mine in two runs back from a spell at Goulburn but at the same time he hasn’t been far away at the finish. Expect he’ll roll forward onto the speed and maybe the tighter Wyong track will suit him. 4. Northern Voyage is on the back up from failing at Kembla Grange last Tuesday where he led off a wide gate and was safely disposed of. He could easily lead this field and be an improver with an easier time in front.

How to play it: Miss Moana E/W ($4.60 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 3 – 2:20PM REAL ESTATE ACADEMY FOR SMEETHY HANDICAP (1350 METRES)

2. Bobbing is a handy type who hasn’t raced since a narrow but strong win at Hawkesbury back in July but he looks very well placed kicking off at this trip. He was unlucky at 1000m fresh last time in and don’t worry about him running last in a trial on September 10, he wasn’t let go at all. Wyong might not be his ideal track but he should be hard to hold out.

Dangers: 1. Our Royal Egyptian has been a bit disappointing this time in though she did battle on fairly well at this track just over three weeks ago. Down a notch in class and if she can get control in front she has her chance. 4. Etheridge is one from one after a last to first victory at Hawkesbury in mid-July and has to be respected on that. I thought her trial at Wyong recently was a bit plain but she didn’t set the world on fire in trials prior to her debut. 6. Calamity Mo was probably not suited at the 900m fresh at Newcastle but she made some ground in a reasonable return. Lone win was at 1400m before a break so expect her to be improved here and she could feature in the placings.

How to play it: Bobbing WIN ($4.00).

Race 4 – 2.55PM JA TIGHE PLUMBING & WHOLESALE APPLIANCES PLATE (1000 METRES)

Prepared to give 2. Nobody’s Puppet another chance after she was a beaten, alarmingly drifting, favourite at Gosford a couple of weeks ago first-up. She was forced to do a bit of work to get up on the speed and I thought she boxed on gamely to hold second and go under less than a length. Dry track will suit her and expect her to take plenty of beating.

Dangers: 7. Fallgold wasn’t a factor at Canterbury second-up but if you forgive that run and go on her super first-up effort at Newcastle, where she sprinted hard late over 900m, she’s right in the mix here. Looks the main threat. 4. Hiemal raced on the pace when runner-up at Bendigo fresh but couldn’t get near them at Echuca last time. Switch back to NSW may suit and it wouldn’t surprise to see him go close. 8. Infinite Dreams trialled quite well at Warwick Farm a month ago and is worth keeping safe while 3. Bentley Magic is another coming off a handy trial and this is a lot easier than his debut back in December too.

How to play it: Nobody’s Puppet WIN ($2.50 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 5 – 3.30PM SE RENTALS FOR SMEETHY HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

In a race of several chances Godolphin filly 9. Segalas appeals on the back of quite a nice trial at Warwick Farm recently where she made significant ground after having some trouble finding room early in the straight. You’d like to see a bit of support but I can see her featuring in the finish on debut.

Dangers: 1. Coppergate is an interesting runner having his first start for Clare Cunningham and first as a gelding. Showed some ability early on but has obviously had a few issues. Two trials of late have been handy and he’s hard to beat. 2. Akeed has led and battled on okay in two 900m so you’d expect him to lead over 1200m. If he can control himself at the extended trip he could take some running down around here. Each-way. 7. Evalina was right in the market at Newcastle last start, Akeed ran third in the race, but disappointed. She’s been back to the trials and on her debut effort she’s entitled to another chance.

How to play it: Segalas E/W ($6.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Segalas finishes off her Warwick Farm trial well on September 7

Race 6 - 4:05PM MINGARA AND PKF FOR SMEETHY HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

4. Hermosa Reward is coming through the grades well this time in and is back in trip after a game effort when out to 2000m at Taree. She toughed it out well to win over a mile at Scone prior and from a good draw she’ll be in this for a long way.

Dangers: 3. Zabeel’s Choice was tipped out as favourite at Goulburn last start but she’s consistent enough to suggest if she gets the right run in this race, up on the speed, she’s capable of being there at the finish. Possibly a bit under the odds for mine though. 2. Victory Anthem found his best form for a runaway win at Nowra over a mile a month ago and you’d expect an attempt at similar tactics will be on the cards here with the claim. He’s not out of it. Wouldn’t shock either to see 6. Twilighter hitting the line strongly too first-up at the mile.

How to play it: Hermosa Reward E/W ($4.20 TAB Fixed Odds).

Hermosa Reward runs second at Taree on September 3

Race 7 - 4:40PM THE ENTRANCE LEAGUES FOR SMEETHY HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

5. Second Island will be sitting back and waiting in the wings counting on them overdoing it up front as she did when scoring at Gosford in a similar race last start. There’s every chance that could occur and she’s a decent chance to run over the top again.

Dangers: 1. Stone Cold is a tough on pacer who is rarely far away at this sort of level. Run down late by a smart mare at Wagga last time and was game at Hawkesbury prior to that. He can be in the finish. 2. Rastafarian looked to have his chance for mine behind Second Island at Gosford but he’s one of those honest types who will give a good account again if he can sit just off them and conserve some energy. 7. Princess Lottie excels at the short trip and wasn't disgraced in a good Highway at Randwick before a break. Wouldn't surprise to see her run well.

How to play it: Second Island WIN ($2.80 TAB Fixed Odds).

Second Island wins impressively at Gosford on September 6

Race 8 - 5:15PM EVERYTHING SPORTS & PERPETUAL CONVEYANCING HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

No horse has better form lines all day than 2. Miss Invincible and she looks thrown into this Class 1 event. Narrowly beaten by Gem Song two starts back then starts $6.50 in a Listed race at Scone and is a solid fourth. Liked her trial at Rosehill and she’s a go forward horse and can offset the outside alley. So long as she doesn’t have to put the foot right down to get across she can beat these.

Dangers: 5. Venture Capital led and boxed on pretty well first-up at Newcastle over 900m and has been back to the trials for a tickover and she could be the key to Miss Invincible getting across from outside her. She’s only won the one race but is very honest and should be competitive. 8. Power Rush created a big impression on debut with an easy all the way win at Tamworth a couple of weeks ago. Much more depth here but she’s from the Kris Lees stable, is on the up and has to be respected. 4. Celer is an interesting horse resuming and he won comfortably over this course back in May before being outclassed at Rosehill but not disgraced. Trialled well enough and is one to keep an eye on.

How to play it: Miss Invincible WIN ($3.70 TAB Fixed Odds).
