Wonder Mare Winx Begins Final Campaign At Randwick

The eyes of the world will be on Sydney’s Royal Randwick this Saturday for the return of Winx as the mighty mare aims for a remarkable 30th straight victory in the Group 2 $250,000 The Star Apollo Stakes.

The equal-highest rated racehorse in the world, Winx begins her final racing campaign on Saturday at Australian Turf Club’s The Star Chinese Festival of Racing.

Racing fans on Saturday can welcome the Lunar New Year and the Year of The Pig with lion and dragon dancers, and with God Of Wealth lucky red pockets handed out across the racecourse ahead of Winx’s appearance.

As part of The Star Chinese Festival of Racing, two former champion horses from Hong Kong, Bullish Luck and California Memory will parade on the Family Lawn.

Australian Turf Club staff will hand out free Winx flags throughout the afternoon ahead of the mare’s highly-anticipated run at 3.50pm, race six on the card.

Special Winx merchandise including commemorative pins and caps will be on sale.

Winx is a $1.09 TAB Fixed Odds favourite, with another crowd favourite Happy Clapper ($9) the only other runner under double figures.

Australian Turf Club Chief Executive, Jamie Barkley, said Sydney had one of its final chances to see Winx race live this Saturday.

“Winx has gone beyond racing and sport to being a household name now alongside Australian icons such as Bradman, Thorpe or Freeman,” Mr Barkley said. “Her every run is now closer to her very last and will be a part of Australian racing and sporting history for generations to come.

“Sydney shouldn’t miss any chance to see this amazing horse, quite possibly the best we’ll ever see, live in action.”

Saturday’s nine-race card also features the Group 2 $200,000 TAB Light Fingers Stakes, Group 3 $160,000 Southern Cross Stakes and Group 3 $160,000 Robrick Lodge Triscay Stakes. The Royal Randwick track was rated a Good 4 on Thursday afternoon.

Royal Randwick offers free public parking in the infield, entrance via High Street, while NSW Transport Buses run direct to the racecourse. General Admission gates open at 11.45am, with Australian Turf Club Members gates opening at 11.30am.
