Winter Wonderland For Memes

By Brad Gray At Royal Randwick

Memes has arguably been the find of the Sydney winter with the Jason Coyle-trained filly winning five races from her seven outings.

The daughter of Time Thief started the campaign an eight-start maiden but added a fifth victory to her tally at Royal Randwick on Saturday and taking her record to three from three at the track.

Memes does it again

“You’ve got to start thinking about when you get serious about nicer races. She has had a really good winter and now we’ll have to sit down and establish where she goes,” Coyle said.

“I think she paraded as well as she did first-up but we’ll take her home and make sure she pulls up.”

Memes controlled the race from the outset with Rachel King, the only jockey to have won on her, pushing her out to beat Clipper in a leader-dominated affair.

“The inside gate dictated that we had to roll forward and they all decided to sit off her. It’s typical of those horses that keep winning everyone wants to find something to beat them,” Coyle said of Memes who started second favourite behind Clipper.

Meanwhile, Memes’ unraced full sister Lucere was sighted for the first time at the Warwick Farm trials recently and Coyle has high hopes for the two-year-old.

“Early days I would have said that this horse (Memes) would win a couple of provincial races and the other one was a serious horse,” Coyle said.

“I had said to the owners that I think the other one is better but now Memes has done this!

“(Lucere) will trial again. She is much like Memes and so raw. They probably need that racing preparation and strengthening to really bring them on.”
