Wellington boasts a small community of ‘helpers’ that regularly head out to the racecourse for working bees.
“The community we have out here is pretty special,” said Malcolm Brown, Wellington Race Club’s Promotions Manager. “Whenever anything needs to be done they’ll all come out and pitch in.
“When we had to erect a chain mesh fence to keep the kangaroos out, a host of railway workers were straight out here to get it all done. It’s the same for our committee, it is only small but we all work very hard.”
Wellington Race Club will host Sunday’s $150,000 CDRA Country Championships Day that also features the $100,000 State Wide Sheds Wellington Boot.

“There is more than $535,000 in prizemoney on offer and that’s pretty good for a club that races only eight times a year,” Mr Brown declared. “This is our second straight Country Championships so we must be doing something right. The day is getting bigger and stronger each year.
“And our racing surface is one of the best in New South Wales – John Mills (track manager) has done a fantastic job.” One of the features on course is the popular Oyster, Prawn and Champagne Bar: “It’s always packed out.”
