San Domenico Important Addition To Wodeton's Road To Rose

By Ray Hickson

Champion trainer Chris Waller is known for keeping to a proven formula when targeting a big race but he’s deviating from the norm for classy colt Wodeton’s Golden Rose campaign.

The Golden Slipper runner-up will have two lead up runs into next month’s Group 1 starting in Saturday’s Group 3 $250,000 Smithfield RSL San Domenico Stakes (1100m).

It’s been a steady build up for the Coolmore colt with three barrier trials, the latest on the Polytrack at Warwick Farm last week, since late July with Waller keen to ensure he’s right at his top for his shot at a valuable Group 1.

“It’s a bit short of his best but I just want to be well prepared going to the Golden Rose,’’ Waller said.

“We’re going to give him a two run prep into the Golden Rose. I’ve gone Run To The Rose (then) Golden Rose before but this time of year you have your setbacks.

“Whether it be wet weather, whether it be feet or a temperature which happens this time of year.

“He’s a good colt and I want to prove that in the spring.”

It’s been 10 years since Waller took out a San Domenico, that was Japonisme in 2015 while Shellscrape in 2009 is his other success when the race was run at 1000m.

Wodeton, who has barrier two for his resumption, hasn't raced since he ran fourth in the ATC Sires' and is on the second line of betting at $6 for the $1 million Group 1 run on September 27.

As Waller mentioned, he’ll head to the Run To The Rose (1200m) in two weeks to top off his build up for the Golden Rose.

Waller unveils another of his Godolphin squad when Silver Slipper winner Beiwacht makes his stable debut in the San Domenico from the outside barrier.

He’s also had three trials, the first under James Cummings, and he scored on the Polytrack in the latest of them.

“He’s a new addition to the stable and we’re still learning about him,’’ Waller said.

“He won the Silver Slipper, he’s a well bred horse of Godolphin’s and it’ll be exciting to see him run as well.”

Four of the eight runners in the Group 3 $250,000 Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) hail from the Waller camp with last start midweek winners Central Coast and Sixties joined by Fermoy and Providence.

The unbeaten Autumn Boy is set to trial at Rosehill on Thursday so won’t be ready to resume until next month.

“Our second tier horses coming through are targeting that race,’’ he said.

“The wet weather has held us back so some of the Queensland stars we thought would be there are missing.”
