Talk of the TAB Everest can wait a couple of weeks but if Tempted turns up in the Golden Rose in the same style she won first-up at Rosehill it’d be hard to deny her a shot at the big money sprint.
The Godolphin filly, having her first run for Ciaron Maher, made light work of the boys as she became the second filly (after In Secret) to win the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m).
Punter’s Intelligence data showed she clocked the race’s fastest last 600m of 33.52 but it was when she chimed in from the 400m-200m that she dazzled, running 10.95 and the only horse in the race to break 11 seconds.
That was on the back of a 10.90 from the 600m-400m so she’s sustained a decent run through the second half of the race.
From an overall time perspective she’s run 0.66 seconds, or almost four lengths, faster than the mares did over the same trip in the Sheraco Stakes a race earlier.
Tempted was one of the better two-year-olds of last season and it appears she’s come back a level higher, and with similar opposition in the Golden Rose she’ll be the horse they all have to beat.
There was merit in the run of Wodeton behind her in fourth placing, he found himself a long way back behind what was a solid tempo and ran the second fastest last 600m of 33.64.
Only 0.01 seconds separated him and Skyhook (11.64) for the quickest last 200m.
A few others to note out of the Run To The Rose, Beiwacht did an excellent job to ride the speed and hold on for second and his 34.45 last 600m doesn’t illustrate his effort.
State Visit ran a handy race first-up at a trip short of his best, running 33.85 for his final 600m, though Wodeton with a run under the belt did go past him.
And the jury can be out on Group 1 winner Nepotism who beat three home but in isolation his last 600m of 33.92 is good enough at a trip below where he’ll excel – he does have work to do to make up the ground on the filly.
Autumn Glow continued her march making it six wins from as many starts in taking out the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) and she showed a sharp sprint in doing so.
She’s run the meeting’s fastest last 600m of 32.76 in scoring a predictable win, especially as she’s just tracked the leaders and dashed past them in the straight.
With 54.5kg in the Epsom Handicap, her first try at a mile, she’ll have her chance to earn a first Group 1 win but it does give her rivals a fighting chance.
One of them will be Pier, who was first-up when charging home into third in the Theo Marks and running 32.78 for his last 600m. His last 200m of 11.28 was only 0.08 outside the winner’s and he was always going to improve with the run.
Probably a hidden run out of the race was from Doncaster placegetter Encap who settled last, and couldn’t possibly win from where he was, before running 33.08 for his last 600m to run sixth.
He was beaten some seven lengths but does have a handy second-up record. He is a dry tracker though so will need conditions to suit.
Kerguelen showed he’s not just a heavy tracker with a slashing, and somewhat unlucky, third in the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1100m).
The Godolphin galloper missed the start and was held up at a number of stages in the straight when trying to run on but still clocked 32.92 for his last 600m and the meeting’s fastest last 200m of 11.09.
Some others to note:
Dark Glitter continues to run well in stakes company and considering the sauntering pace in the Sheraco she’s performed superbly to run second, closing 33.21 for her last 600m. Don’t be surprised if she snatches a race through the carnival.
Modella produced a big first-up performance in the Midway, she was forced back from the wide gate and ran into third with a 33.53 for her last 600m, about 1-1/2 lengths faster than the next best, wide out on the track.
A Highway could be in Upwardly Mobile’s future on the back of a closing fourth behind stablemate Nova Centauri. Her last 600m of 34.70 was easily the race’s best.
Fastest last 600m: Autumn Glow 32.76.
