The last Saturday meeting for 2024/25 has certainly unearthed a few horses to follow into the new season and none moreso than Glorious Moments who was clearly the standout performance from Randwick.
He made it two from two as a gelding with his dynamic win in the Agency Real Estate Handicap (1300m) and had four lengths to spare on the line. And it was just as good on the clock as it was visually.
Punter’s Intelligence data showed he ran 1:18:34 for the journey and when compared to the Benchmark 78 over the same distance a few races later he was about 4-1/2 lengths faster.
The soon to be four-year-old, trained by Jim and Greg Lee, ran a last 600m of 36.33 which was a clear second (or over six lengths) faster than the rest of the field aside from Stardeel who ran 36.94.
But his last 200m of 12.50 saw him put a stamp on the race with Stardeel again the next best on 13.20.
Glorious Moments will likely again step up in grade at his next appearance in a couple of weeks where, based on this performance, he’ll be very hard to beat again.
Given how slowly run the Marcellin College Randwick Handicap over that 1300m turned out it’s no surprise there were some slicker sectionals home with the race producing the meeting’s fastest on a day no horse got close to breaking 35 seconds.
That went to Slinky who clocked 35.42 as she ran home from well back into third behind Lugh with seventh placed Crop Duster running 35.44.
Worth forgiving Sacred Rocks after a midrace move didn’t pay off and she spent many of her carrots in the middle section, clocking 11.26 from the 1000m-800m and 11.63 from the 800m-600m, both clearly race best, as she boxed on to run fifth.
It was expected something would emerge from the two-year-old opener, the Keeneland September Yearling Sale Handicap (1100m) that’s how it eventuated with Nashville Jack showing he’d taken benefit from a debut prep in the deep end.
His last 600m of 36.09 was just outside the race’s best but it was the 400m-200m where he produced his dash and put the race away running 11.67.
He’d contested the Silver Slipper and Black Opal in his two starts earlier in the year and in the context of the day, where the winners got wider on the track, to score on the fence is a boost to his effort.
The race’s fastest last 600m went to the only debutant in Koibito who ran 36.03, rallying after being a shade outsprinted early in the straight, ahead of Wisnierska (36.08) sailing down the middle to run third.
There was potentially a hidden run in the ATC Thank You Trainers Handicap (1100m) in the shape of $41 chance Termagent who lost any chance when she went up in the air at the start and was three or four lengths behind the second last horse on settling.
She was full of running in behind a wall of horses early in the straight and wasn’t able to be fully tested yet still ran 36.24 for her last 600m and while that was about 0.8 seconds slower than the winner Cigar Flick that horse had clear running.
And it was another case of forgive Rantan and Zouripper out of the ATC Thank You Owners Handicap (1100m), they’ve run the second and third fastest last 600m – 36.19 and 36.27 respectively – while closer to the inside.
Fastest last 600m: Slinky 35.42
