Punter's Intelligence Wrap - Kembla Grange 28th August

The honours in the San Domenico Stakes (1100m) went to In The Congo but there’s so much to unpack from the Group 3 feature at Kembla Grange, particularly around the run of Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside.

He may have finished fifth in the six horse field but Punter’s Intelligence sectional data showed he actually clocked the second fastest last 600m of 33.70.

Stay Inside settled last but was warming up strongly running 11.12 from the 600m-400m and 10.82 from the 400m-200m, both the race’s best, and you could see him loom.

But whether fitness gave out or he didn’t want to stretch out in the ground he weakened badly in the last 200m posting 11.76 which was almost two lengths slower than the fastest for that split.

So the jury is out for now and we wait to see how he performs in the Run To The Rose in two weeks.

Paulele posted the race’s fastest last 600m of 33.63, that was two and a half lengths faster than the well rated winner In The Congo but it seems he gave away too much start.

The run of Champagne Stakes winner Captivant is promising from a Golden Rose perspective especially as he wasn’t expected to finish so close over the 1100m. He ran 33.83 for the last 600m and the fastest last 200m of 11.48.

Arguably the win of the day was Signora Nera’s dominant first-up performance in the Peltzer Special Achievement Handicap (1500m) and it was either a peak she won’t be able to repeat or a sign she’s in for a super spring campaign.

The mare finished midfield in the ATC Oaks in the autumn and placed third in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks so she’s already quite well performed.

Her last 600m of 34.06 was some five lengths faster than the next best in the race and two of those lengths came in her last 200m of 11.18. She certainly wasn’t stopping.

This race was a Benchmark 78 so there’s scope for her to go to another restricted race before stepping back into stakes grade so where Chris Waller points her will be interesting.

A couple of stayers out of the NSWROA Trophy (2000m) caught the eye. Great House spotted a huge start but he powered home into fifth running the fastest 200m splits from the 1200m to the 400m and the last 200m.

His last 600m was a race best 34.72 and clocked 11.72 for his last 200m. He looks ready to win if he can draw a little more favourably.

Another import Mankayan was responsible for the second fastest last 600m of 34.77 and last 200m of 11.77 as he ran into third place.

The winner Our Intrigue settled ahead of that pair and she sprinted home in 34.85.

Kelvedon Road could pick up a TAB Highway in the coming weeks after an excellent effort despite running seventh in the 1400m edition.

He was last on the turn and reeled off a 33.94 for his last 600m and really wound up late with an 11.08 from the 400m-200m and 11.27 for his last 200m, that time a length faster than the next best.

Fastest last 600m: Hulk 33.18
