John Schell's Tips For Wyong (Saturday - Provincial-Midway Qualifier)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 1:25PM TWIN LAKES AIR & SOLAR MIDWAY MAIDEN PLATE (1600 METRES)

7. Hippy Dreams has only had two starts and has performed well in each of them. She finished fourth on debut at Kembla Grange at big odds then ran a solid third behind High Dandy at Wyong at her only other start. She stays at the mile in this and has the advantage of barrier one, and gets her chance to break through.

Dangers: 2. Hellbetta was down the track when resuming then finished third at Newcastle as an odds-on favourite when second-up. He should give plenty of cheek against these. 4. Dolzino was safely held when third on a wet track at Kembla Grange last weekend and should be in the placings again. 5. Kia Ora Gold debuted with a second at Kempsey and should be improved by that experience.

How to play it: Hippy Dreams WIN.

Race 2 - 2:00PM REWARD HOMES PROVINCIAL CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1350 METRES)

1. Gago finished fourth at Newcastle when resuming from a spell and that was on the back off a win at Hawkesbury before taking the break and joining a new stable. He looks to have plenty of upside and looms as one of the hardest to beat here.

Dangers: 2. Braven resumed with a second at Scone then broke through with a last start Muswellbrook victory. He’s on an upward spiral and can be in the thick of things again here. 3. Red Cobra resumed with a fourth at Wyong and was beaten less than a length in that. He is up and down but could be placed here if at his best. 4. Tender Streak broke her maiden at Gosford midway through last year before being spelled. She’s had two runs back from a spell at Hawkesbury and Gosford and a repeat of the last start effort would have her figuring in this.

How to play it: Gago WIN.

Race 3 - 2:35PM THE ARY SUPER 3YO MAIDEN PLATE (1000 METRES)

8. Jamakin Money debuted in good company at Canterbury early last year then was spelled. She since resumed at Gosford a couple of weeks ago with a solid fourth when hitting the line well. She’s drawn well here and can break her maiden.

Dangers: 4. Bambi Belle had three starts late last year and wasn’t disgraced in any of them. She’s had two trials leading into this for a Nowra win and a second at Rosehill and should be primed to run well here. 2. Pocket Eights is on debut and has performed well in a number of trials, winning the latest of them. He’s drawn wide but should run well. 9. Ludovica was beaten less than half a length when fourth at Kembla Grange when resuming from a spell and should figure prominently if she runs up to that performance.

How to play it: Jamakin Money WIN.

Race 4 - 3:10PM LIFEFUL NDIS CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (2100 METRES)

2. Elemental was a debut winner at Avondale in New Zealand last July then was spelled. He changed stable and then had two trials before resuming with a second at Goulburn when hitting the line well. The step up in distance suits and he should run well again here.

Dangers: 8. Coto De Caza resumed from a spell with a second at Kembla Grange then was midfield at Hawkesbury when safely held. The step up in distance should suit and a forward showing is expected. 5. Super Defense was disappointing when resuming but should show improvement in this, while 10. Think Romance hasn’t been disgraced in her three starts and has place claims here.

How to play it: Elemental WIN.

Race 5 - 3:45PM ASH & SONS 2YO MAIDEN PLATE (1200 METRES)

2. Formal had looked good in his trials before debuting with a seventh at Gosford when only being beaten a little over 1.5 lengths. He strips better for that experience and Ashley Morgan, who was aboard on debut, sticks with him in this.

Dangers: 4. Interjection has performed well in a number of trials, winning the latest of them at Warwick Farm in preparation for this debut. He is primed to run well, while 13. Killcare Beachgirl has looked good in a couple of recent trials and should be given plenty of thought. 6. Marais has finished second in both of his two starts at Gosford and has the talent to give this a shake.

How to play it: Formal EACH WAY.

Race 6 - 4:20PM OLIVIERI'S FLORIST MAIDEN HANDICAP (1350 METRES)

1. Good Once has shown ability in his nine-start career with six placings to his name. He ran fourth when resuming at this track, then finished third at Nowra before a second at Kembla Grange. He’s knocking on the door to win and gets his chance here despite having the outside gate to contend with.

Dangers: 3. Parade Ground shows talent and finished second before being spelled at Kembla Grange. He resumed after two trials with another second at Kembla Grange behind the talented Briasa, and should be thereabouts again. 4. Star Blazer resumed from a long spell with a sixth on the Kensington track at Randwick after leading and strips fitter for this. 2. Oakfield Peewee was beaten a fair margin when placed at this track on debut and could be an improver.

How to play it: Good Once WIN.

Race 7 - 5:00PM POLYTRACK PROVINCIAL-MIDWAY CHAMPIONSHIPS QUAL. (1350M)

8. Ausbred Flirt is a classy mare when at her best and was placed in the Angst last spring before finishing fifth in The Invitation. Never a factor in group 1 company at latest run before being spelled then resumed and ran well enough when sixth in the Guy Walter at Randwick. Has a solid second-up record and will find this an easier assignment. Stable is flying and should be very hard to beat.

Dangers: 3. Dream Hour was a winner on the Kensington track last preparation before failing to fire at Rosehill. Earned a berth in the Stradbroke by winning The Gateway at Eagle Farm prior to being spelled then resumed in this grade when hitting the line well for a fourth behind Short Shorts at Hawkesbury. Better for that run and is a second-up winner. Worth including among the main chances. 6. Karedada has shown plenty of ability in his career and managed to win four of his six starts in good style including a Canterbury victory before being spelled. Since resumed on the back of two trials and wasn’t disgraced when midfield behind Shadows of Love in this grade at Gosford. Drawn better this time and can bounce back. 1. Strait Acer had outstanding form in good races last spring with a second in the Silver Eagle being followed by a fourth in the Golden Eagle then ran third in the group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield before being spelled. Resumed with a fifth in the Expressway in what was a good run then had his chance when in this grade at Kemble Grange behind Territory Express. Has had a trial to be kept up to the mark for this but has drawn wide. Has the talent to overcome that and is a leading contender.

How to play it: Ausbred Flirt WIN.

Race 8 - 5:40PM LAKES PODIATRY CONDITIONAL BM68 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

9. Wealthy Investor ran well in his first two runs back from a spell before following a Newcastle failure with a last start close-up second here behind Panic after leading. He should run well against these.

Dangers: 1. Overextend was a Tamworth winner three starts ago then wasn’t disgraced in the Walcha Cup before running second at Newcastle again after leading. 2. Resistance is resuming and ran well in the Four Pillars last spring before running last at Newcastle and then being spelled. A bold fresh card is on the cards. 12. Reigning King was placed at Gosford last tome out after leading and can be in the money again at his best.

How to play it: Wealthy Investor WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 3 (8) Jamakin Money.
Race 4 (2) Elemental.

Best Value:
Race 5 (2) Formal.
