Jockey Quotes - Verry Elleegant Stakes

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $1,000,000 TAB Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick.

James McDonald (Via Sistina): “I thought they are supposed to be easier than that. No, she was great. Second-up last preparation, that was her worst run so we had that in the back of our mind and she’s come away and obviously got through that well. She’s got through her second-up run and now it’s all upside from here.

“There’s no guarantees in racing, but she’s going to be awfully hard to beat, especially now that that second-up run is out of the way. We all know what she can do third and fourth-up, and her big one is fourth-up, so that’s when she won her Cox Plate. Hopefully she can get somewhere near that. She probably won’t ever get near that again but at least she can get somewhere near that.

“We know it’s probably not going to happen again, but all she’s got to do is run within a length or two, or even three, so I’m sure she’s come back in that sort of order. The way she won the Cox Plate was unbelievable, so we’re under no illusions she’s going to do that again. But we hope so.

“I just enjoy competing and going out there and trying to do my absolute best. I work with a great team with Chris and he preps them up beautifully. And I ride some absolute Ferraris.”

Via Sistina wins the Verry Elleegant Stakes

Jason Collett (Fangirl): “Really good. Probably sprinted better than Via, got to Via but that last 100m where I needed a bit more Via. She was a bit tougher and good on her.”

Nash Rawiller (Lindermann): “Awesome run again. He never lets you down. He is so honest. I can’t wait until the day he gets a few on-pace favours track wise. He’s getting beaten by two champions.”

Tim Clark (Zarakem): “Just found them a bit sharp for him over that 1600m on that ground. Will be better over a bit further with more cut in the track.”

Tyler Schiller (Fawkner Park): “Very surprising. I thought his come up really good. Strong late and everything we have been looking for going into his prep. All boxes checked.”

Ashley Morgan (Arapaho): “Funny thing to say being an older horse now but I reckon he is in career best form. He has sharpened up from that first run. When he gets to his trip, he will be very competitive in his races.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Land Legend): “That was a nice positive first up run from him at a mile.”

Tommy Berry (Golden Path): “He built up really nice from the 600m. He’s only been beaten a couple of lengths by our best WFA horses. He has a nice race in him this prep.”
