Jockey Quotes - Surround Stakes

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $750,000 The Chase Surround Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick.

James McDonald (Lady Shenandoah): “I’m rapt with her. She really had to fight it out. Credit to Gai and Adrian’s filly. That was as tough as it comes.

“I thought we were done and my filly pulled out all stops. Top class filly. Obviously we were expected to blaze away but you’ve got to have the tough victories to get the good ones as well. That was a good effort.

“Whatever they set her for, she will, I’m sure. Whatever they set her for.”

“You’ve got to remember she is only a young filly and I know we’ve got all these big hypes on them but it is still early days. She will fill out even more as a four-year-old. What she is doing is a really good effort.

“Dundeel was $1.06 - I’ve had shorter before. It comes with big expectation but we’re lucky to be riding these horses and Chris preps them up and you have full confidence when they’re there to produce. It is a huge team effort.”

Tim Clark (Lady Of Camelot): “She was very brave. Went down fighting.”

Tommy Berry (Lazzura): “I wouldn’t mind a barn full of her. She is just so honest, tenacious. Just keeps bumping into these good fillies. If they have an off day, over a mile, she will be there ready to pounce.”

Jason Collett (Manaal): “Great effort. Couldn’t get a spot from the wide gate. Made our run into the straight but it told at the 150m. Far better performance today.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Powers Of Opal): “I thought she went great. First up, they’ve run home in a slick sectional but she’ll get a bit further and improve off that.”

Tyler Schiller (Lilac): “I thought she was terrific. Probably the first time she has had to dictate a race. Did a great job of it. Quickened up well. Just beaten by some superior fillies.”

Ronan Whelan (More Territories): “Jumped and travelled well. Followed the favourite all the way through. For a filly stepping up from a Benchmark race she probably travelled a bit too well in that kind of grade. We just tired a little bit late on.”

Reece Jones (Amelita): “Probably exerted a little bit too much energy in the early stages of the race. Was trying to overdo it. Travelling too well and it told in the finish.”

Josh Parr (Castanya): “Disappointing performance actually. We might have to just step back a little bit in grade and see how she measures up then.”

Nash Rawiller (Declichy Boulevard): “She ran super. I was quite held up from the top of the straight to the 300m and she found the line really well.”

Jay Ford (Husk): “She tried really hard at that level. She is consistent and having a go.”

Adam Hyeronimus (Dominetta): “We had a wide run. I was quite surprised, I thought she’d show more speed than that. Probably a testament how much she has matured and come back. She is on the right path heading towards 2000m.”

Ashley Morgan (Idle Flyer): “I thought she was good. Just got the backwash of a shuffle up mid-race. Strongest part late.”

Regan Bayliss (Island Dec): “She was disappointing overall.”
