Ashley Morgan (Hidden Motive) : “I jumped well but Tommy was more positive than I expected him to be so I just let him slide up underneath me. I gave him a signal to go and sit up outside the lead but he never came back to me, so I was just happy to take him to the front, took my time getting there and he got into a lovely rhythm and gave a proper kick at the top of the straight.

“When you're racing this calibre of horse, a kick like that sometimes isn't good enough. But he's very tough with it late and he’s always carried a lot of condition, so improving this run was key.

“He's a gross horse and he's come a long way since last preparation, and just getting him on top of the ground has been key, he's also got a good attitude, and that's going to help him.”

Hidden Motive wins Roman Consul Stakes

Tim Clark (Beadman): “Should have won the race. He was held up badly. Horse is going terrific.”

Tommy Berry (Marhoona): “A touch disappointing obviously. She dropped the bit right on the point of the corner which I thought was strange for her. Got a little bit unbalanced half way down the straight. Felt the track might have been a bit firm for her. Might be just an excuse as well so we’ll see how she pulls up. She obviously met the winner 4kg better today and it has come out and beaten us by 2L. She obviously wasn’t the same horse she was the other day.”

Tyler Schiller (Gallo Nero): “Even run first up. I thought he had the right run to finish off a little bit more. He may have just overdone it a bit pre-race. He was a bit sweaty. I think he needed the run. I think he will improve a lot second up.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Beskar): No comment.

Nash Rawiller (Grand Eagle): “He has run well. They really kicked from the 300m there. He has been able to pull a bit of ground which the time suggests he has gone very well.”

Jason Collett (Pallaton): “He did really well. Was caught wide when the stable mate didn’t cross. Still just wants to do a bit much through the middle. 1200m first time too. Pass mark from where he has been.”

Zac Lloyd (Napoleonic): “He is a lovely colt. Ran really well. Just gave myself a length just in case the leader never kicked. Ultimately it was hard to get that length back. They have dashed home very quickly. He is only going to improve with time in racing.”
