Jockey Quotes - Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $5 million Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick.

Tom Marquand (Dubai Honour): “I was going off what everyone else was telling me, I’ve haven’t had the chance to sit on him really. For the boss (William Haggas) to target the Queen Elizabeth with another horse and pull it off, it’s just insane. Genuinely, I’ve jumped aboard this horse on the right day at the right time and it’s everyone else behind it that got the job done, not me. All I had to do was point and shoot. A huge well done to the team.

“He’s unbelievable. To be honest as good as this horse is William’s probably even better. To be riding for someone who has the confidence to say ‘yeah, just make sure he gets relaxed.’ That gives you supreme confidence to do what in theory should be best. Just counting my lucky stars to be honest.

“The only point I was concerned was when I lost the back of Anamoe. James (McDonald) kicked a bit further forward than I thought he would.”

James McDonald (Anamoe): “He was gallant in defeat. He got away beautifully, presented like the winner and the English horse is pretty good.”

Joao Moreira (Alenquer): “He was a little bit uncomfortable on the surface. Never relaxed during the race. Pulled a bit hard in the back straight. Wasn’t able to finish the race off.”

Nash Rawiller (Mo'unga): “He was fantastic. Look I think that is the best he’s shown us for quite some time. Seemed to appreciate being further back through his own fault. There is a Doomben Cup coming up something like that. Definitely a really good race left in him. Good result for everyone.”

Jamie Mott (Numerian): “Great effort. Got outgunned late by a couple of better horses. He ran really well.”

Damian Lane (Unicorn Lion): “He ran well. Tried hard and that is about as good as he can go.”

Tim Clark (Zeyrek): “He ran ok. He gave away a bit of ground at the start which in a slowly run race was costly but he ran on honestly.”

John Allen (Gear Up): “I thought he was OK. Improvement in that run.”

Brenton Avdulla (Hezashocka): “He gave me a lovely ride. He drew low so had his chance. Ran a good fourth so has a nice race in him.”

Dylan Gibbons (Montefilia): “Better run than it looked. Race wasn’t run to suit. She needs a nice fine run and didn’t get that today.”

Hugh Bowman (El Patroness): “Had a lovely run but she needed more tempo. She was outsprinted.”
