Jimmy Set To Star In The TAB Everest

Multiple Group 1 winning sprinter Jimmysstar will represent TAB in the $20 million TAB Everest at Royal Randwick on October 18.

The All Aged Stakes winner will aim to give TAB back-to-back victories with the Ciaron Maher stable after the Maher trained Bella Nipotina represented TAB to win last year’s race.

Jimmysstar, a winner of 9 from 18 and more than $2 million in prizemoney, is set to resume in the Spring after a career best preparation which included wins in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate and All Aged Stakes.

TAB General Manager of Trading & Data Dave Beirne said Jimmysstar ticked key boxes.

“Jimmysstar is a proven Group 1 sprinter and his win over 1400m in the All Aged Stakes gives us confidence the high pressure 1200m in the TAB Everest will be perfect for him,’’ he said.

“He graduated from a handicapper to a genuine weight for age star in the Autumn and we think he can go to another level in the Spring.

“We’re also pleased to partner with the Maher stable again. It proved a winning combination with Bella Nipotina last year and while Ka Ying Rising is clearly the horse to beat, Jimmysstar certainly gives us a genuine chance of going back-to-back.”

Jimmysstar is currently $11 with TAB to win the TAB Everest, behind Ka Ying Rising which remains a firm $1.80 favourite.

“Ka Ying Rising is a popular favourite with punters and remains odds on at $1.80 ahead of Private Harry at $6. Jimmysstar certainly presents value at $11 and we would expect him to firm now that he has secured a slot in the race,’’ Beirne said.

Trainer Ciaron Maher said he was excited to partner with TAB again following last year’s success and confirmed Jimmysstar would head to the TAB Everest second-up.

“TAB are such a big supporter of racing in general. To get Jimmy locked away nice and early – it makes the job a whole lot easier. We can concentrate on the race and having him right on the day,’’ he said.

“The plan will be to go to The Shorts over 1100m, given his success in the Oakleigh Plate, and then a month to the TAB Everest with a trial in between.”

Maher said like Bella Nipotina, Jimmysstar continued to improve with age.

“Each preparation he comes back in he probably looks a little more like Bella. Every time you see him, he gets a bit bigger, a bit stronger – he has certainly improved again I feel.

“Bella did it from the front, Jimmy probably does it from midfield or worse - hopefully we can get the same result.”
