Hyeronimus Confident Rebound Is On Cards For Convergent

By Ray Hickson

Jockey Adam Hyeronimus can see nothing but upside in lightly raced gelding Convergent and is confident he can make a lie of his last start when he returns to Rosehill on Saturday.

There are some lofty goals in the back of trainers Jim and Greg Lee’s minds for later in the spring and the expectation from all concerned is that he’ll get back on the right path in the Midway Handicap (1500m).

Convergent, $4.80 with TAB on Thursday, has only raced three times and Hyeronimus said nothing worked in his favour on the heavy 10 two weeks ago but is adamant he’s a horse with plenty of staying promise.

“He has a lovely big long action and has a good constitution so he will be able to get out over distance,’’ he said.

“When he won first-up, although the race probably wasn’t that strong, it was the way he did it sitting back, he was relaxed and travelled nice, and he went around them and won convincingly.

“He backed that up straight into a Midway second-up. The only negative against his name was that run in the bad conditions so he’s a horse that’s definitely on the way up.”

It wasn't Convergent's day at his first run for two months. He was slowly out, travelled wide and copped a bad bump early in the straight that put him off stride.

Hyeronimus said those things more than the heavy ground conspired to bring him undone and, though beaten nearly seven lengths by Cold Brew, he was pleased with the way he picked himself up and still wanted to find the line.

“He’s a horse that’s still learning how to race and how to conduct himself,’’ he said.

“He travelled well through the first half of the race but he just couldn’t find a rhythm and get balanced.

“Barrier one will make a big difference to where he races and what he has to do from the 600m in terms of making up ground.

“He’s progressive, he’s a nice style of horse and he carries himself well. He’ll only keep improving.”

Co-trainer Greg Lee has mentioned the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) as the dream for Convergent and expects a top three finish on Saturday before stepping up further in distance at his next start.

He’ll naturally need to win his way into that race and Lee said he’ll get that chance a bit later on.

“I’d be more confident in him if the race was 1800m, he’s still trying to match it with these sprinters, and once he gets over a distance you’ll see a better horse,’’ Lee said on Sky Sports Radio.

“If he gets a clear run he’ll be hard to beat.

“We’ll try and get him into the Kingston Town and that will tell us where we’re going to go.”

Meanwhile, Lee said promising stablemate Glorious Moments has had to be spelled due to a bout of colic following his impressive win last month.

Adam Hyeronimus on Light Infantry (race 2): “He actually got through (the heavy) pretty well. We go up in distance for this run and I think that will help. Although it’s not a dramatic rise in distance I think it will suit him better.”

On Fully Lit (race 8): “I liked the way he jumped out and found a rhythm straight away, settled nicely, but when it was time to pick up he was spinning on the track. Hopefully it’s not as bad this weekend and if he can conduct himself the way he did last start he’ll be hard to beat.”
