Everest Climb Now Into Full Stride At Randwick

A host of star sprinters with TAB Everest ambitions clash at Royal Randwick in Group and feature racing this first Saturday of spring ahead of the official start of the Sydney Everest Carnival.

City Tattersalls Club Cup Day with 10 races and 130 entries sees four Group races including a hot field in the $1 million Group 3-Southern Cross Group Concorde Stakes.

2022 Everest champion Giga Kick (Clayton Douglas/James McDonald) opens a $3.10-$2.70 TAB favourite in Saturday’s feature sprint as he returns from a long spell and looks to attract a slotholder for this year’s $20 million TAB Everest.

Bella Nipotina, a multiple Group 1 winner for trainer Ciaron Maher and with Craig Williams aboard, is at $4.20 (in from $5) ahead of Joe Pride’s Private Eye ($4.60 out to $6/Jay Ford) as he looks to gain a slot in a third Everest.

The $300,000 Group 2-Daily Press Chelmsford Stakes, $300,000 Gr 2-Darley Furious Stakes, $300,000 Gr 2-Ikon Tramway Stakes and $200,000 Listed-Sydney City Lexus CTC Cup will also be run.

Australian Turf Club Head of Racing and Wagering, Nevesh Ramdhani said pathways to the TAB Everest would feature across September and October.

“The Southern Cross Group Concorde Stakes will be one of several 'mini Everests’ in coming weeks and Saturday’s field has many of the nation’s very best sprinters clashing," Mr Ramdhani said.

“The last two weeks have seen some stellar performances from among the best horses in the land and you can’t miss live on track more of these stars as we build deeper into the spring.

“We are also delighted to continue a long association with one of Sydney’s other great Clubs in City Tattersalls for this always popular raceday."

Manaal ($3.20 into $2.80 favourite) for Michael Freedman/Jason Collett and Ameena ($5.50 into $5) for Anthony & Sam Freedman/James McDonald resume rivalry in the Darley Furious Stakes, the second leg of the Darley Princess Series. Ameena defeated the early favourite last start in leg one – the Darley Silver Shadow Stakes.

In the $300,000 Gr 2-Ikon Tramway, top mare Amelia’s Jewel now trained by Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald and ridden by Tommy Berry, is TAB favourite ($2.80 into $2.60).

A strongly backed second favourite Freedom Rally ($8-$5.50) visits for Queensland trainer Tony Gollan with Craig Willaims to ride in Saturday’s traditional pathway to the TAB Gr 1-Epsom on 5 October.

The $300,000 Gr 2-Daily Press Chelmsford Stakes has seen star Godolphin mare Zardozi crunched in betting from $2.50-$2 for trainer James Cummings and jockey James McDonald. She carries Group 1 career form as well as a last start solid sixth in the Gr 1-Winx Stakes.
