Charlton Confident Future's Bright For Napoleonic

By Ray Hickson

The view John O’Shea and Tom Charlton have of emerging three-year-old Napoleonic probably mirrors that of connections of several of his rivals at Warwick Farm on Wednesday – there's a bright future in store.

Napoleonic is a young horse Charlton says can certainly reach further than the Benchmark 68 level of the CRC Powering The Chase Handicap (1200m) but he also knows the level that’s required to win the race.

He points to the form around one of his rivals, Rivendell, who managed to beat the O’Shea/Charlton prepared Artistic Venture, Group 2 placed on the weekend, last month.

Charlton said the colt couldn’t have done any more than what he produced in his almost five length win.

“We’re trying to build a bit of confidence with him,’’ Charlton said.

“It was a really good effort, obviously in a weak grade so he was entitled to do so but the manner in which he did it was great.

“We didn’t opt to throw him in the deep end after that maiden win but if he can continue to progress and develop the right way he’s a horse we’d hope will end up in some nice races.

“There’s plenty of others (like him) in this race so it’s a good race and you’d imagine a few of these horses might make their mark in better races in time.”

Napoleonic, $3.40 with TAB on Tuesday, had two starts as a youngster and started $6 on debut in a race won by King Of Pop over Savvy Hallie.

He led at his second outing at Newcastle and was run down by Next Jen but Charlton said the son of Wootton Basset has taken significant improvement out of that preparation.

“He was a really nice two-year-old and was a little unfortunate on debut not to run into it,’’ he said.

“Then the way the race panned out in his second start he got left a bit in front. He’s grown up mentally over his winter break and looks a horse with a bit of class.”

It’s been a month between runs for Mama Joy going into the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (2110m) and Charlton said it’s been a matter of marking time for a suitable race.

She was a popular winner at her first start over a staying trip at Gosford at the end of August, putting 3-1/2 lengths on the chasers.

“It’s the next step for her, she won well last start,’’ he said.

“She’s getting better with racing and it looks like she will stay well.”

Tom Charlton on Mamushka (race 5): “It was a good run (first-up), she got a little bit tired late but bit was a credible effort. She will keep progressing with racing, she finds a decent enough midweek event but can apply herself well.”

Meanwhile, an encouraging fresh effort by Snow In May has Charlton hopeful she can have better fortune in Saturday’s Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill.

The mare was placed off a wide barrier in the Mona Lisa Stakes at Wyong earlier this month and he said a kinder run would give her a good chance to be competitive.

“It was a good effort, she couldn’t have done much more,’’ he said.

“It was a tricky gate and one of those races where there were a few hard luck stories, one of which was her.

“It’s a tougher race than she faced first-up but she has competed well before against some of the better horses in the race and meets them better at the weights.”
