Neil Evans' Tips For Scone (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4/Soft 5 and Rail out 5m so even early before trending to the outside

Race 1 BM 66 HCP (1100m):

Good race to start. Gosford 4YO gelding 4. Rambler Rebel has burst back on to the scene after a long break with consecutive wins at Taree, both times showing speed and determination, despite lugging off in the straight. Trainer has rung the gear changes, with a near side blinker for the first time, off side blinker coming off, and pacifiers going on. This is a tougher test, but looks right up to it.

Dangers: Wyong 4YO gelding 3. Engadine moved through his grades nicely, but found the pressure of a good BM 64 field at Gosford from a wide gate last start a bit tough, and this suits better. Rival Wyong 6YO 5. Apache Dude has been up for a while, but slowly threatening to win a second race; while another Wyong runner, 8YO gelding 1. Another Aan has had plenty of problems, and not started for 15 months, but was a very smart sprinter a couple of years back, with a good winning strike rate. Has trialled twice, but lumped with an enormous 65kg, surely will need the run.

How to play it: Rambler Rebel to win and quinella 3 and 4. Odds and Evens (First 2): Split.

Race 2 MAIDEN PLATE (900m):

Tricky affair over the short course, with a few key first starters. One of those, 3YO local filly 13. She's Unusual (Sepoy x Morning Cloud by Exceed And Excel) is bred for speed and will wear the winkers. Sat outside the leader and was made to hit the line winning a recent trial.

Dangers: Another debutant, 3YO Newcastle filly 12. Eliana Star has trialled solidly twice and looks ready to go for leading stable; while 3YO filly and stablemate 14. Wild Fortune (Not A Single Doubt x Opulence by Benicio) has also spent plenty of time at the trials, and draws the inside for her debut. Connections of Dubbo mare 8. Southern Strategy have been frustrated, with the 6YO still to crack her maiden after 24 starts, but she's been placed in half of those, and jockey switch is significant. Newcastle 4YO entire 2. Patagonian returns for a second prep, and two forward trials suggests he can improve on an ordinary first campaign.

How to play it: She's Unusual to win and quinella 12 and 13. Odds and Evens: Split.

Race 3 F & M MAIDEN HCP (1100m):

Tough race, with first starters having a big say. Smartly-bred local 3YO filly 4. Deepwood Vale (Redoute's Choice x Sacred Witness by El Moxie) resumes after a fair debut run at Tamworth back in April, and looks ready to go off an impressive home track trial win when working home under a hold from off the speed.

Dangers: Debutant 3YO Newcastle filly 5. Grappas Girl (Hinchinbrook x Helvetica by Zariz) has trialled nicely, but draws wide. Rival 3YO Newcastle filly 9. Show Tickets led for a long way at Kempsey on debut after being well backed, and will be better for that experience. Watch the market on 3YO Tamworth filly 10. Tokala (Pluck x Hafjell by Tiger Hill) who has had three trials for a trainer who is very good at placing her youngsters. Randwick 3YO filly 11. Vivid Art (Artie Schiller x Vivid by Eavesdropper) also makes her debut for top metro stable off two fair trial runs, but draws the extreme outside barrier.

How to play it: Deepwood Vale to win. Odds and Evens: Split.

Race 4 C, G & E MAIDEN HCP (1100m):

Now the boys' turn over the same trip. Beautifully bred 3YO Randwick colt and first starter 5. Rouchel (More Than Ready x Lovely Jubly by Lion Hunter) looked pretty smart sweeping through along the fence in a trial earlier this month, despite inferior inside ground, and big spacious track here should suit.

Dangers: Newcastle 3YO gelding 4. Roman Candle improved into his second run finishing hard at Wyong over a longer distance, but he's had a six week freshen-up for this shorter trip and draws the inside, so watch for him charging home. Local 3YO gelding 6. Soldier Poy (Sepoy x World Of Gold by High Chaparral) makes his debut off a reasonable home track trial, and stable is having a good run; while expect a much-improved run from 4YO Muswellbrook gelding 10. Bullet Lad who returns for a second campaign having won a trial, and the blinkers removed.

How to play it: Rouchel to win and quinella 4 and 5. Odds and Evens: Split.

Race 5 CL3 HCP (900m):

Back to the scamper trip, and confident 5YO Tamworth gelding 2. Crowd Surfer can take the next step over this short course. Powered home to win back-to-back Maiden and Class 1 races, although inside draw a little query for a sprinter who likes to settle off the speed.

Dangers: Smart local 3YO filly 6. Emperor's Star is the main threat. Bolted in her maiden two runs back this track before disappointing at Muswellbrook, but that was a deep race, and she draws to get a lovely run on the speed. Newcastle 4YO mare 1. Silver Melody is building a nice record, and held her ground in a stronger race third-up at Newcastle, but handicapper hasn't missed her with 62.5kg. Watch the market on resuming 3YO Muswellbrook colt 4. Bengalla Bay who is normally better second-up, but came out of a strong trial behind Gem Dealer who was unlucky not to win the Highway at Randwick on Saturday; while 5YO Wyong mare 5. Big Legged Woman has been freshened up coming back in trip, and in well at the weights should be hitting the line at the business end.

How to play it: Crowd Surfer to win and quinella 2 and 6. Odds and Evens: Evens.

Race 6 CL1 & MAIDEN PLATE (1600m):

Smart 5YO Newcastle mare 4. Love Delight was a dominant Maiden winner seven weeks back at Muswellbrook over Moon Panther who won on Sunday before finishing hard in a Class 1 at home. The mile looks ideal at this stage, and she draws to get a nice run just off the speed. The one to beat.

Dangers: Randwick 4YO gelding 8. Suitor from one of the top stables was big odds when debuting with a fair effort over 1500m at Newcastle, and can improve again. Wyong 5YO gelding 1. Brixton Town likes to settle back and finish off, and after four runs back this prep is screaming out for the longer trip, with the blinkers off for the first time. Expect big improvement too from local 4YO mare 5. Zealot who didn't fire a shot second-up, but she's way better than that, and the winkers come off.

How to play it: Love Delight to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Love Delight runs second at Newcastle on August 15

Race 7 F & M BM 58 HCP (1300m):

Competitive and open battle. Well bred local 4YO mare 2. Emanuela has been a little disappointing in two runs this prep, but will appreciate being back at home, and from a low draw can settle back with plenty of cover & launch her customary big finish.

Dangers: Improving 4YO Newcastle mare 6. Mummentum dug deep at Taree to sail home and win her maiden at second start, and she looks well up to this, although inside gate with more weight may prove tricky. Rival 5YO Newcastle mare 7. Showada resumes for strong stable, and could sprint well fresh. Was a dominant Class 1 winner at Taree over 2000m back in February before only even to the line this grade at Pt Macquarie to end last prep. Local 6YO mare 3. Palais De Louvre was an impressive front-running winner this grade two runs back before flopped in deeper company next start. This is much more to her liking, but goes up sharply in weight and drawn off the track; while local mare 1. Daiquiri Lass has never been far away this prep, and draws to get a nice trail, but 61kg in a race of some depth is a tall order.

How to play it: Emanuela to win and trifecta 2,6/1,2,3,6,7. Odds and Evens: Split.

Race 8 C, G & E BM 58 HCP (1300m):

The boys wrap the card up over the same trip and grade. Local 4YO gelding 5. Enseguida can peak here second-up over an ideal distance. Won consecutive races in the autumn before doing his best work late resuming in similar grade at Dubbo, and form rider goes on.

Dangers: Expect 6YO Wyong gelding 7. Silent Jack to also improve significantly second-up after a flat return at this track. Another Wyong runner, 7YO gelding 4. Texas Tycoon has finished hard from a mile back in his last two, and while he should appreciate this course, the inside draw probably won't suit his pattern of racing; while 4YO Mudgee gelding 8. Lawnmeet has been consistent enough this prep.

How to play it: Enseguida to win. Odds and Evens: Split.
