Neil Evans' Tips For Orange (Monday)

By Neil Evans

Track likely Heavy 8 and rail true so even early trending wider late.

Race 1 MAIDEN PLATE (1280m):

We start an open and giant 10-race card, including races added from the abandoned Narromine meeting, with a testing battle for the maidens. Keen on 3YO Hawkesbury filly 8. Fast Play who did her best work late from a wide gate on debut at Mudgee. Draws to get a softer trail here, and is bred to get through rain-affected ground.

Dangers: Improving Gulgong mare 3. Beach House can go close second-up after working home late in a stronger maiden at Wellington. Expect Warwick Farm mare 6. Grey Mantra to improve on a handy closing debut effort at Canberra. Dubbo 5YO 2. Tank Attack has ability, but may be feeling the effects of a long prep, and better form is on firmer footing; while watch the betting on 3YO first starter 7. Prodigal Prince who has had two trials.

How to play it: Fast Play to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 CLASS 1 HCP (1280m):

Despite a big weight, Warwick Farm 6YO gelding 1. Temple Run is hard fit, good in wet ground and can claim a long overdue second win. Just missed in a stronger race at Kembla three runs back, and can be forgiven back in grade at Hawkesbury last start when drawn in the worst part of the track.

Dangers: Canberra 6YO 3. Attuned has had mixed form since winning his maiden at Leeton, but draws to get a nice run on speed and handles wet going.

How to play it: Temple Run to win. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 3 CLASS 2 HCP (1400m):

This looks ideal for 5YO Mudgee mare 5. Polished Penny after finding the line well in a much tougher Highway at Randwick. Had previously finished hard from a mile back at Forbes, and looks well treated up only 2.5kg on that metro effort.

Dangers: Warwick Farm mare 4. Liberty Fields careered away to bolt in his maiden at Goulburn two runs back, and looks a pure wet-tracker. Goulburn 5YO 3. Goodradigbee has been solid enough in two deeper races this prep, and a little less depth here. Expect improvement third-up from Hawkesbury 4YO 1. Just A Horse who gets a stronger rider.

How to play it: Polished Penny to win and quinella 4 and 5. Odds and Evens: Split

Polished Penny runs second at Rosehill on August 29

Race 4 BM 66 HCP (1000m):

Consistent Cowra gelding 2. Just A Flash is a smart performer around this grade and trip. Draws to dictate in front with superior speed, and relishes rain-affected ground. Should bolt in!

Dangers: Kembla mare 3. Designer Maid can run a race first-up off a nice trial. Two of her three career wins have come fresh, and blinkers have been removed, although she's a query in heavy ground. Gap to the rest, but include in wider exotics Canberra 8YO 5. The Inflamer who drops back from a tougher BM 70 Federal, and will be finishing on; while Bathurst mare 1. I Stole Your Love resumes without a public trial, but draws well, although still likely to need the run.

How to play it: Just A Flash to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Just A Flash wins at Wellington on September 7

Race 5 MAIDEN HCP (1400m):

Back to the maidens. Warwick Farm 3YO filly 3. All Too Rio was very disappointing as a well backed favourite at Canberra after an impressive closing run on debut at Newcastle, although it was a struggle to make up ground that day. She still looks the one with superior progression.

Dangers: Rival 'Farm filly 1. Autumn Falls gets her chance third-up in her first real prep after only collared late in that same Canberra race. Up in weight, but much fitter, and this is weak. Parkes mare 8. Miss Monte has been in the money all three runs this prep, but a query if the track gets into heavy range; while watch the betting on Testa Rossa filly 7. Messina Magic who has trialled quietly, and debuts in blinkers.

How to play it: All Too Rio to win. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 6 CLASS 1 HCP (1600m):

Talented 5YO Gulgong gelding 1. Spilia has had no luck, covering a stack of ground in his last two, and is so much better than his one win and 10 placings from 22 starts suggests. Has been strong late in his last couple, and stable apprentice is back aboard. Untested in heavy ground, but has got through the soft, and is by Pierro.

Dangers: Improving Warwick Farm mare 3. Unloch The Rock landed her maiden in impressive fashion third-up, and draws to get an economical run just off the speed. Consistent Gilgandra 6YO 6. Poster Man rarely puts in a bad one and drops in weight, although taking on better opposition here; while Dubbo mare 7. Hibern has worked home late in her last three, and craving the extra distance.

How to play it: Spilia to win and quinella 1 and 3. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 7 CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (1600m):

Tough and open race. Improving 4YO Scone gelding 5. Wadi Musa can go back-to-back after sweeping home to finally land his maiden at home well into the prep. Beat For Da Boys comfortably who then came out and won a CL1 at Moree.

Dangers: Dubbo 5YO 4. Shwanky Doo has been up for a long time, but possesses a powerful final 400m. Has been charging home in BM 58 and CL1 grades, and as long as gets cover from the awkward gate will run out a strong mile. If Bathurst 5YO 2. Pop Power can also slot in from the wide draw, he'll be in the finish. Came off some steady form to power away and win his maiden by nearly five lengths. Dubbo 6YO 1. Get Up Alby has only one win from 31 starts, but placed a further nine times in generally tougher grade, but looks almost weighted out of this back up to 59kg. Parkes mare 7. Empowered Madam is best of the rest.

How to play it: Wadi Musa each way and box exacta 2,4,5. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 8 CLASS 1 HCP (1000m):

Another wide open sprint with plenty of chances. Bathurst mare 4. Motives broke through at only her second start for leading trainer/rider combination, and can win again.

Dangers: Improving Dubbo 4YO 1. Daredevil has been close-up in two solid runs back from a spell, and will go forward from a nice draw. Watch the betting on Dubbo mare 8. Shazza who resumes with no official trial, and is better over more ground, but her fresh record is solid enough. Include Cowra mares 5. Brunela who is well in at the weights, and can be ridden quieter from the inside draw; and 9. Valarian who is also down in weight.

How to play it: Motives to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 9 BM 58 HCP (1000m):

The handlebars go down again over the sprint trip. Progressive Canberra mare 4. Scalded is racing in career peak form, but will need to show all that customary early speed to get over from the outside barrier. Bolted in her last couple at Albury, and loves rain-affected ground.

Dangers: Expecting a big run first-up for six months from 5YO Dubbo mare 2. Miss Academy who has a sound fresh record, and fitted with an easy lead-up trial. Lightly raced stablemate 1. Eva's Deel will need some early luck resuming from a wide gate, but she normally comes to hand quickly and is building a good record. Bathurst 5YO 9. Lawnmeet was disappointing last prep, but resumes off a winning trial, and his best form is on wet tracks. Another one resuming Dubbo mare 12. So Good To Me will drift back, but also has a tidy fresh record, and last win was a year ago on this track.

How to play it: Scalded to win and trifecta 2,4/1,2,4,9,12/1,2,4,9,12. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 10 CLASS 2 HCP (1300m):

We close with a competitive albeit thin race. Scone 6YO gelding 3. My Zebrinka has hit the line hard in two handy BM 58s at home, and gets some crucial weight relief.

Dangers: Wellington mares 4. Sass 'n' Twinkle and last-start winner 6. Lady Riz are the only threats.

How to play it: My Zebrinka to win. Odds and Evens: Split
