Neil Evans' Tips For Newcastle (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail out 10m so likely just off the speed pattern

Race 1 3YO MAIDEN PLATE (900m):

We dash into spring over the short course, and there are a few chances. Warwick Farm colt 3. Rocketing By from the David Pfeiffer stable has had a decent let-up since two fair mid-year runs when hard in the market. Looks well tuned for his return winning a recent trial when he sat wide, yet showed good cruising speed to finish over the top.

Dangers: Randwick filly 5. Close To Me re-loads off a six month spell after tackling tougher company in first prep, and also returns off a winning trial; while Rosehill filly 6. Head On Up made a sound debut at Hawkesbury when well tried in the market.

How to play it: Rocketing By to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Rocketing By wins a trial at Warwick Farmon August 7

Race 2 F & M BM 64 HCP (1200m):

Now the older mares' turn, but it's the lone filly who can take the prize. Emerging and resuming 3YO 7. Sweet Reply from the Freedman yard at Randwick can do what she did on debut at Kembla in autumn, sweeping home from a few lengths off the speed. Draws to get a soft run in behind, and has been fitted with two recent trials.

Dangers: Progressive Hawkes-trained 4YO 2. Front Money drops in grade third-up after boxing on bravely through heavy ground in two runs back. Cruised home to win her maiden last prep in only start at this track, and should take plenty of running down despite a sharp rise in weight. Former Victorian 6YO 5. Hard Faith was impressive and well backed on debut for her new Newcastle stable in a thinner race, although best form is clearly on rain-affected going.

How to play it: Sweet Reply to win and quinella 2 and 7. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 MAIDEN HCP (1500m):

Back to the maidens over a bit further, and break-through time looms for impeccably bred 4YO Wyong mare 1. Reaching from the Kim Waugh stable. Got going late resuming here, but extra trip right up her alley, and she can settle back with cover and explode home.

Dangers: Improving Rosehill filly 5. Canadian Spice is another one who will be finishing off late third-up on a 10-day back-up. Covered ground here last start, but still found the line impressively; while stablemate 4YO 3. Zarzou chased home the supremely bred Bucharest as a hot favourite here second-up and is close to breaking through.

How to play it: Reaching to win. Odds and Evens: Odds a special

Reaching runs third at Newcastle on August 13

Race 4 CLASS 1 HCP (1400m):

Loved the dominant debut win at Scone of 3YO filly 10. Land Ahoy trained by John Sargent at Randwick charging home from midfield. Has been given plenty of time since, draws to get cover and distance looks ideal.

Dangers: Speaking of the blueblood colt 7. Bucharest, he'll likely go around as favourite after that strong maiden win on debut, and draws to get a lovely trail right behind the speed. Warwick Farm mare 5. Parche looks the only other winning chance after hitting the line hard resuming at Kembla, and only career win so far came second-up when she flew home over this trip. Include Randwick 3YO and first-up maiden winner 8. Media Starguest if you're playing the wider exotics.

How to play it: Land Ahoy to win and quinella 7 and 10. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 C, G & E MAIDEN PLATE (1300m):

More open battle here for the boys. Back from a let-up since failing in heavy going on debut, 3YO colt 3. Captivare from the Chris Waller yard can rebound first time on firm ground. Trialled nicely enough, and draws to stalk the speed.

Dangers: Big watch on ex-Victorian colt 7. Milliondollarbill who resumes for the Snowden stable off two steady trials. Resuming colt and stablemate to top selection 10. Volterra hasn't raced on a good surface since narrowly beaten as a heavily backed favourite on debut last spring. May need the run off a quiet trial, but watch the betting. Include Randwick colt 14. The Mediator who resumes for only his second start off two nice trials, and draws the inside.

How to play it: Captivare to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 F & M MAIDEN PLATE (1300m):

Now a very open girls' edition, and there are a stack of chances. Progressive 3YO 2. Centimental from the Waller stable should be right at her peak fourth-up after motoring home here last start. Took on good metro opposition as a 2YO in mid winter.

Dangers: Plenty of them headed by Rosehill filly 10. Spirituality held her ground resuming in the heavy, and should improve down in weight and first time back on top of the ground since her debut last December. Randwick filly 8. Salateen fought on strong after leading second-up at Hawkesbury, and she isn't far away. Newcastle filly 11. True Faith hit the line well on debut at Warwick Farm, and resumes off two improving trials; while Wyong filly 7. Princess Betty hasn't missed a place in three runs so far, and will appreciate the longer journey second-up.

How to play it: Centimental to win and first four 2,8,10/2,7,8,10,11/2,7,8,10,11/2,7,8,10,11. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 7 C, G & E BM 64 HCP (1200m):

A competitive and even sprint for the boys to close the meeting. Like the value about lightly-raced 4YO gelding 5. Captain Solo having his first run for the John Thompson stable at Randwick. Normally comes to hand quickly, and has been given two controlled trials.

Dangers: Improving Wyong colt 8. Riccardo has good tactical speed, and used it nicely to claim a CL1 at Gosford in heavy ground. Proven in the dry as well, and as long as gets over from a wider barrier, will be right there. Randwick 4YO 2. Gaelic resumes off two quiet trials for the Waterhouse-Bott stable. Was a smart debut winner at Canterbury back in summer, but has to cart 61kg. Talented 4YO 6. Coco Cuber can be very tough to catch, but finally starting to show some consistency, and it's been a long time since he found a Good surface; while Far North Coast 6YO 1. Green Mountain is best of the rest dropping in grade third-up.

How to play it: Captain Solo each way and trifecta 2,5,8/1,2,5,6,8/1,2,5,6,8. Odds and Evens: Split.
