Neil Evans' Tips For Muswellbrook (Monday)

By Neil Evans

Track likely Soft 5 and rail out 3m from 1000m to 300m into a cut/away

Race 1 MAIDEN HCP (900m):

We kick off over the short course. Love the value here about Scone filly and first starter 14. Winside who travelled well in a high class country trial here before peaking and clocking off late. Draws the inside with blinkers on for a stable going great guns, and any rain won't hurt being by Sidestep.

Dangers: Big watch on local mare 3. Rar Rar who hasn't started for more than 14 months, but has trialled smartly. Expect Scone filly 10. Our Award to improve off his first-up run from a wide gate at Dubbo; while Cessnock filly 12. Silver Lass has trialled okay, and draws to get a soft run on debut.

How to play it: Winside each way and trifecta 3,14/3,10,12,14/3,10,12,14. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 BM 58 HCP (1000m):

Another competitive sprint, and 4YO Scone gelding 2. Step On Fire is the one to beat first-up off an impressive trial win. Was a dominant winner on debut back in autumn, and has superior tactical speed.

Dangers: Keep safe Wyong 5YO 1. Aytobe who resumes off a five-month break. Big weight off-set by 3kg claim, and trialled nicely behind Bombasay who won a BM 78 at Randwick on Saturday. Scone 6YO 5. Gold Codes is consistent in and around this grade, but he's been up for a long while, and is back up in weight.

How to play it: Step On Fire to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Step On Fire wins a trial at Scone on September 30

Race 3 MAIDEN HCP (1500m):

Promising Randwick filly 2. Al Sahara is ready to break through well into the prep after charging home in his last couple at Goulburn. Will relish the long and wide run home here, and trainer has removed the blinkers.

Dangers: Big watch on Newcastle mare 6. Surf who resumes in blinkers, and typically has been given two controlled trials. Dubbo 3YO 1. Prodigal Prince improved at only his second start to miss by a long head at Orange over a mile. Blinkers have been added, and if he can tuck in from a wide barrier, should be in the finish.

How to play it: Al Sahara to win. Odds and Evens: Evens

Al Sahara runs second at Goulburn on October 6

Race 4 MAIDEN PLATE (1280m):

Liked the way local filly 13. Lionsteps motored home here last start in a race run in record time. Hasn't missed a place in her last four, and gets the blinkers on as well. Was scratched from Newcastle on Saturday to be saved for this.

Dangers: Gosford mare 8. Pirrama was specked at a big price charging home late second-up in that same race as the top selection, and drawn to get similar cover back in the field. Scone mare 7. Inducement showed enough in her first prep, and resumes off a forward trial.

How to play it: Lionsteps to win. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 5 F & M BM 58 HCP (1280m):

Even battle for the girls. Progressive Newcastle 4YO 3. Pizzly swept home to claim her maiden second-up, and this looks a nice follow-up race despite a sharp rise in weight. Any rain is a plus.

Dangers: Wyong 3YO 2. Pink Beau held her ground okay resuming in a CL2 here, and her only career win so far came second-up in autumn. Doesn't want rain. Inconsistent 1. Pluck And Lucky is up in weight and drawn wide, but if she finds a good enough trail, has the ability to storm over the top. Has been generally taking on better opposition, but never won past 900m; while expecting sharp improvement second-up from Scone 4YO 5. Fox Spirit with blinkers going on.

How to play it: Pizzly to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 C, G & E BM 58 HCP (1280m):

Now the boys turn, and progressive Randwick 3YO 7. Aerobatic Warrior is the clear measure after surging home to win a good maiden here at only his second start. Still well treated up only 1kg, and just needs to get over from a tricky draw.

Dangers: Local 6YO 5. Roy's Command did very little resuming in a much stronger race, but suited here with weight rise off-set by a 3kg claim. Include in exotics Tamworth 6YO 8. Poet Lad who broke through second-up at home off a long break; while Wyong 7YO 12. Apache Dude is the best of the rest.

How to play it: Aerobatic Warrior to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 BM 66 HCP (1500m):

Scone 4YO 5. Brother Bassy is ready to improve getting up to his pet trip after two fair runs back from well off the speed. Drops in weight, trainer has made some key gear changes, and both wins from eight career starts have come here.

Dangers: Warwick Farm mare 2. Sensacova is working towards another win after finishing close-up in the Cootamundra Cup, but rises 5kg in weight. Tamworth 5YO 7. Stampede Warrior has hit the line nicely in two runs back, but this is tougher. Newcastle mare 11. Predictable Miss has been poor in two runs back, but gets in on the limit weight from a soft draw; while must include in exotics Wyong mare 12. My Desire second-up over a more suitable distance.

How to play it: Brother Bassy to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 8 CLASS 1 HCP (1000m):

We finish back over the sprint trip, and again there are plenty of chances. Progressive Scone mare 3. Lady Patricia swept home for a dominant maiden win here at only her second start, although this is tougher. Drawn to get a soft run, just may need to get away from the fence late in the day.

Dangers: Big market watch on rival Scone filly 10. Very Sharp who resumes off an eight month break with no public trial, but won on debut at home. Wyong 3YO 5. Go Gadget also resumes with no public trial, but has ability. Quirindi mare 1. Dreaming For More has been close-up in two runs back behind a couple of smart ones, and is overdue to win again. Tamworth 5YO 6. Cozhecancan has been right on the winner's heels in all three runs this prep, and gets in well at the weights after rider's 3kg claim.

How to play it: Lady Patricia to win and trifecta 3,10/1,3,5,6,10/1,3,5,6,10. Odds and Evens: Split.
