Neil Evans' Tips For Grafton (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

Track likely Soft 6 or slightly better and rail true

Race 1 C, G & E CLASS 1 HCP (1100m):

The male sprinters get us under way. Capable 4YO 4. Time For Don resumes for a new Tamworth stable. Hasn't officially trialled, but won first up last time and will roll forward from a handy gate.

Dangers: Local 3YO 6. Swanston didn't handle the firm track at Port at his fourth start, but finished hard on a Soft 7 to win on debut, and blinkers have been added. Far North Coast 5YO and former Victorian 1. Backfill caught the eye finishing late in his first run for 11 months despite having little luck, and even better suited on a soft rating.

How to play it: Time For Don to win. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 2 MAIDEN HCP (1700m):

Hard to see improving 4YO 1. Helmet Head not winning this. Hard fit now, and hasn't missed a place in his last three. Found the line well here last time, and this is weak.

Dangers: Coffs 4YO 2. Star Of Success has been working home okay all prep, and yearning for this longer trip; while Kempsey 4YO 3. Solskjaer is also suited out to this distance.

How to play it: Trifecta 1/2,3/2,3. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 MAIDEN PLATE (1400m):

Still with the maidens in a tricky race. Armidale mare and former Victorian 6. Royal Delights can break through second-up. Liked her last furlong at home resuming, and extra ground is a natural plus in a thin race.

Dangers: Kempsey 4YO 2. Shortaz is suited coming back in distance after fading badly at Port last start. Had previously hit the line well here, and draws to get a good trail, just doesn't want it too wet. Another ex-Victorian mare 3. Alt Eff Four produced by far the best run of her seven starts flashing home second-up at Lismore as a rank outsider, and finally looks competitive.

How to play it: Royal Delights to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 CLASS 2 HCP (1400m):

Handy 4YO 3. Vivendo Il Sogno drops in class after working home okay here last start. Drawn to get a soft run just off the speed, and extra ground is a further plus. Was scratched from Lismore on Sunday to be saved for this.

Dangers: Local 4YO 4. Hyperion Star also gets to an ideal trip second-up after doing his best work late first-up in a BM 58. Fellow home track 4YO 5. Hiroko can peak fifth-up out to this journey, and from the inside draw.

How to play it: Vivendo Il Sogno to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 BM 58 HCP (2200m):

Now the stayers' turn. Tough Port 6YO 2. Dangerous Dan can go back-to-back after taking off early and careering away for a dominant win at home in similar grade. Generally drifts well back, but can find an ideal trail, and no concern over the longer journey. The one to beat.

Dangers: Armidale 6YO 5. Tickets For Youth hasn't won for a while, but hit the ling strong at home, and ready for this trip. Kempsey 7YO 1. Itsa Fait Accompli can really mix his form, but will find this much easier than the Tuncurry Cup when outclassed a mile, and big weight is off-set by a 3kg claim.

How to play it: Dangerous Dan to win and quinella 2 and 5. Odds and Evens: Split

Dangerous Dan wins at Port Macquarie on October 10

Race 6 MAIDEN HCP (1100m):

Open and testing sprint, with a few making their debut. Progressive Murwillumbah mare 4. Le Figaro was having her first run in nearly a year when working home late as a hot favourite at Ballina. Can improve sharply over a little more ground, and bred to relish soft going.

Dangers: Plenty of them headed by debutant local filly 14. Tara Jasmine who has trialled well and drawn to get a soft run. Consistent 4YO and stablemate to top selection 2. Uprise has been well in the market and right on the winner's heels all three runs this prep at this track. Another 4YO on the cusp of breaking through is 3. Holiday In Dubai who resumed with a good closing effort here. Winkers go on, but will need some luck from the extreme outside gate. Include Lismore filly and first starter 12. Rose Bouquet who has trialled well.

How to play it: Le Figaro each way and first four 2,4,14/2,3,4,12,14/2,3,4,12,14/2,3,4,12,14. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 7 JACARANDA PRELUDE (1100m):

Keen on consistent local 5YO 2. Jule's Spirit who has been sparingly raced this prep. Was even through the line last start at Lismore, and the more rain the better, having won all three starts on a heavy track.

Dangers: Local mare 4. She's Choosie resumes with no public trial, but normally comes to hand quickly and has a sound soft track record. Tough 5YO 6. Cocky Rocky has been competitive all three runs this prep against deeper opposition, and also handles wet ground; while include in exotics 5YO and likely leader 8. Rexx who fought on strong in a CL3 here last start, and will give another big sight back in trip.

How to play it: Jule's Spirit to win. Odds and Evens: Evens a special

Race 8 F & M CLASS 1 HCP (1100m):

We finish with a competitive sprint for the girls. Gosford mare 1. Wicked Wench resumes off two trials under a big weight, but has a sound fresh record. Trainer has rung the gear changes, and this is her thinnest opposition in a while.

Dangers: Local mare 3. Queenofthecastle worked home okay resuming here, and can peak second-up; while stablemate filly 9. Super Slick was unwanted in betting on debut at Ballina, but gave nothing else a chance from the front. This is tougher, but has natural speed.

How to play it: Wicked Wench to win. Odds and Evens: Odds a special.

Wicked Wench runs fourth in a trial at Newcastle on October 2
