Neil Evans' Tips For Goulburn (Monday)

By Neil Evans

Track likely Soft 5 (possible downgrade) with some lead-up rain and rail true so should be on-pace early before trending towards the outside.

Race 1 MAIDEN PLATE (2100m):

Staying battle at set weights which sets up nicely for Randwick mare 7. Diva Peron who flashed home late behind hot favourite Brilliant Mind at Hawkesbury last start, and can break through fourth-up now he's fit and at the right distance.

Dangers: Another Randwick-trained visitor 6. Gayson was easily over-run by a smart one at Kensington last start over a shorter journey, but out in trip here against a softer class suits better, and he'll park right on the speed. A 3YO still improving is 5. Galahad's Quest who finished off okay in the heavy at Kembla and looking for this trip now; while include Randwick filly 11. Loves To Rock who improves again at third run also getting out in distance.

How to play it: Diva Peron to win and box trifecta 5-6-7-11.

Race 2 4YO & UP CL2 HCP (1000m):

Warwick Farm mare 3. Miss Antares returned off a lengthy break and two trials to win her maiden at Wyong and has come back stronger.

Dangers: Randwick-trained 1. November Man has been freshened and is better than his record shows. Hit the line hard two runs back in a BM70 before getting a little lost in similar grade around Warwick Farm. Can bounce back on a bigger and more suitable track.

How to play it: Miss Antares to win.

Race 3 BM 58 HCP (1300m):

Got plenty of time for this nice local mare 6. Designer Dance who flew home on debut at Wagga, and then confirmed potential charging late to win her maiden at Wagga when heavily-backed. Big track horse destined for much better races who can take another step here from the off the speed.

Dangers: Rival local filly 8. Barbara Mary is also improving. Won her maiden convincingly at second start, and then chased home a smart one at Canberra in a BM 65. Drops in grade and draws the fence. Warwick Farm 6YO 2. Your Witness looks well placed this grade despite big jump in weight and an average winning strike rate. Continues to hit the line, and fast finishing efforts at Kembla and Hawkesbury rate well for this. Look for improvement second-up from Rosehill 3YO 4. The Soloist who didn't finish off resuming at Wyong, but better suited here, and won his first two career starts this track. Include Randwick 3YO 1. Elaborate who has been freshened after resuming with a solid run this track, but not treated well at the weights.

How to play it: Designer Dance to win; quinella 6 and 8 and first four 6-8/1-2-4-6-8.

Race 4 BM 66 HCP (1200m):

Competitive race, and looks right for talented Canberra 3YO 3. Carruthers - by prolific I Am Invincible out of a mare by 1990 Melbourne Cup winner Kingston Rule - who was strong in a deep Randwick Highway two runs back before freshened and flying home to win a CL2 this track. Extra trip a plus, and gets a nice trailing draw.

Dangers: Canberra 4YO 7. Quantum Time has his hoof right on the button after finishing close-up behind smart Te Ata second-up this grade when well backed. Topweight 1. Chewbacca is a track specialist and class runner. Better suited back to 1200m third-up after compounding badly in the Country C'ship qualifier this track last start, but has to overcome a big weight and wide barrier. Another Canberra mare 6. Ons Vier campaigned against stronger last prep, and back in grade fort first-up run, will get a lovely trail from the gate. Locally-trained mare 8. Art Of Dance is an intriguing runner. Been off the scene for nearly a year, despite having two nice city trials in the spring. No official trial since, and big market watch. Back-marker warrior 2. Tiger By The Tale also comes out of that race behind Te Ata when making up late ground, and will be charging home again.

How to play it: Carruthers to win.

Carruthers wins at Goulburn on March 2

Race 5 MAIDEN PLATE (1300m):

Expecting local 3YO 8. Refire who was well beaten resuming in a stronger maiden to hit back hard second-up. Any sting out of the ground will help, and with the blinkers going on, is drawn to park midfield off the fence and launch late.

Dangers: Canberra staying type 1. Future Time is first-up for six months, but has solid fresh form and will be finishing on.

How to play it: Refire each-way.

Race 6 MAIDEN HCP (1500m):

All aboard improving Randwick filly 5. Diamond Pedrille who looks well placed at third career run. Was big odds in a strong maiden on debut at Hawkesbury before hitting the line hard over a mile at Newcastle. Draws the fence which may be awkward late in the day, but has leading rider aboard to steer a path.

Dangers: Randwick mare 9. Joyous Times is down in weight, and will appreciate getting out to this distance after working home nicely in stronger maidens.

How to play it: Diamond Pedrille to win and box trifecta 1-9-10.

Diamond Pedrille runs second at Newcastle on March 8

Race 7 BM 58 HCP (1500m):

Smart local 4YO 1. Pierino was close-up in a much stronger Randwick Highway last start, but has been asked to lump 64kg. Previous metro form last year and in two runs back very consistent, and he's still the one to beat fourth-up, with blinkers on, despite big weight.

Dangers: Rosehill 3YO 4. Magic Wu is on the brink fourth-up after improving to smash the line at Nowra, and even better suited on bigger track. Warwick Farm 7YO 2. Charming Lad doesn't win often, but has found the line nicely in tougher grade last couple; while local gelding 6. Defy is screaming to win another race after just missing in his last couple this grade, but draws the widest gate, and will wear concussion plates.

How to play it: Pierino to win and box trifecta 1-2-4-6.
