Neil Evans' Tips For Quirindi (Monday)

By Neil Evans

Track likely Soft 5 and rail True

Race 1 FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN PLATE (1100m):

Wide open sprint for the girls at set weights to kick us off. Provincial filly 11. Shootforthestar can park on the speed third-up, and gets back out to a more suitable trip.

Dangers: Big watch on stablemate So You Think two-year-old 13. Boketto who debuts having won the first of two trials, and was preferred here to Mudgee on Sunday; while keeping safe 5. Ishim who will be running on hard.

How to play it: Shootforthestar to win. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 2 COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES MAIDEN PLATE (1100m):

An even wider assignment in the boys' edition, with some prominent first starters on show. One of them Scone three-year-old 10. Salire looks ready to rock off a nice trial win in soft ground. Bred to handle this sort of rating being by Dream Ahead out of a Commands mare.

Dangers: Watch the betting on Rubick four-year-old 4. Mind Game who debuts from the inside draw off two trials, winning the latest comfortably; while 7. Prince Akeem hasn't been seen publicly since a solid provincial trial in late January, but debuts from a handy barrier.

How to play it: Salire to win. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 3 MAIDEN HCP (1600m):

Improving filly 4. Five Bob has early tactical speed, and can take control of this from a low gate. Looking for this distance now and big value third run in.

Dangers: Capable three-year-old 1. Croesus has been well fancied in the market all three runs, but let punters down. Only missed by a long head last start, and extra ground is a plus, but carting 59.5kg from a wide draw is a task. Must respect 6. Scatman facing the starter for a 16th time, but hasn't been far away all prep and drops sharply in weight. Include 3. Quest For Honor if you're playing the wider exotics.

How to play it: Five Bob each way. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 BENCHMARK 58 HCP (2000m):

Tricky affair over the longer trip, but hard to go past progressive Scone mare 3. Frankly Savvy fourth-up. Took over on the turn and careered away for an effortless win in a thinner CL1, and will carry only 1kg more after the claim.

Dangers: Improving 2. Fanmalia finished over a handy CL2 field two runs back before failing to hit the line in a deeper provincial race. Better suited here despite a significant weight hike. Both these were scratched from Mudgee to run here.

How to play it: Frankly Savvy to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 CLASS 1 HCP (1450m):

Having taken 11 runs to break her maiden, emerging provincial filly 5. Mon Amore can go back-to-back. Disappointed as a hot favourite at Taree before a tactical change saw her dominate from the front at Port. Suspect the key has been found, and she'll push forward from an ideal barrier and give them something to beat again. Loves it soft being by Sebring out of a Street Cry mare.

Dangers: Provincial three-year-old 3. Dr Copper would be shorter in the market if he drew closer in, but hasn't missed a place in his last four generally against better opposition. If he finds cover early enough, will again be working into the finish. Here we go again with four-year-old 7. Dream Song, still searching for a second win despite having started favourite and placed in three of her last four. Again well in at the weights after the claim, but the last 100m remains a query. Stablemate filly 12. Majority is on the next line after easily winning a weak maiden at her fourth start.

How to play it: Mon Amore to win and trifecta 3,5/3,5,7/3,5,7,12. Odds and Evens: Odds a special

Race 6 COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRE BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1100m):

Provincial five-year-old 8. Quick Nick beat a handy sprinter at Scone two runs back before being run off his feet in a 900m scamper. Back to his pet journey, but poorly in at the weights from a wide draw.

Dangers: Consistent six-year-old 7. Poet Lad was competitive in some good races last prep, and while his fresh record is poor, trainer has made several gear changes.

How to play it: Quick Nick to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 FILLIES & MARES BENCHMARK 58 HCP (1100m):

The girls' edition wraps it up. Progressive filly 4. Excelness scored a dominant front-running maiden win at her third start. Up in weight from a trickier draw, but has enough quality.

Dangers: Include 7. Havelka who hit the line late at big odds in the Jardel Cup; and 2. Bethpage who hasn't been further back than a length in her last three.

How to play it: Excelness to win. Odds and Evens: Split
