Less than 70 days out from the famous Snake Gully Cup, Gundagai heads into its final meeting before then on Sunday with high anticipation.
The 7 race program is a Memorial Meeting for many of those who have served and worked with the club over many, many years.
Gundagai is in the process of some major on course changes including currently renovating the existing jockeys rooms, with work on new stewards rooms to follow shortly afterwards.
Current President Jeremy Pearce has been in the role for almost 12 months and is excited about what lies ahead at Gundagai.
“There have been a lot of changes with Micheal Heath coming on as the new Secretary after Len Tozer finished up after an incredible 54 years,” he said.
“We have a lot of on course works going on and this will be our last meeting before the Snake Gully Cup which creates so much interest and brings a lot of people into town.”
Gundagai has also announced race caller Anthony Manton, who hails from Gundagai, will be the Snake Gully Cup Ambassador.
Meanwhile on the racing front, Albury apprentice jockey Ella Bent will be looking to snare a win for her master, Ron Stubbs, with Majestic Deel in the Tom Wells Memorial Maiden Plate (1400m).
Ella rode her first winner at Berrigan at her second career race ride only a couple of weeks ago.
“It was such a big thrill to win that first race and I just want to keep improving” Ella said.
“Ron has been a terrific help to me giving me opportunities at trials and jump outs since I started”.
In the Super Maiden, Albury trainer Kym Davison will be hoping to make it three straight wins with his stable runners when Chevrolet Star contests the $50,000 race.
Davison’s past two starters, Autumn Break and Sweet Paree, have been successful.
“It is nice to get a couple of winners but it is harder to keep them going” Davison said.
Chevrolet Star trialled well prior to finishing unplaced at his first run back from a spell.
Doubt Free was an eye catching last start second at only his second run for trainer, Pat Widdup, and is considered one of the main contenders.
Visiting trainer Gayna Williams will bring a few starters to Gundagai including Wonder Step in the Frank Cripps Memorial Benchmark 66 1180m.
Wonder Step has won three of his past four starts as has Grande Bellezza in easier company.
Last start winner Getty may again be able to lead from barrier 3, although Just Google Me has raced right on the speed in recent starts.
Topweight Kappy’s Angel resumes from a spell with a big weight of 61kg.
