Local Trainer Always In The Picture At Taree (Tuesday)

By Tony Megahey

Taree racing doyen Tony Ball rarely misses targeting home meetings and he and prolific northern premiership jockey Ben Looker carry the momentum of multiple recent Grafton Carnival success into Tuesday’s Taree TAB program.

The strongest regional stables and riders remain in proximity following the XXXX July Grafton Carnival.

The spin off is Taree has attracted capacity fields and emergencies for the seven events.

Typically, Looker and Grant Buckley have near full books; 'Bucko' with three rides at big value for Ball continues a long and productive association with the former decade long Godolphin foreman.

Ball trained a double at Grafton’s Thursday Cup meeting with Gold Horizon and Debussy. Looker rode three winners over the Carnival.

“We’re ticking over nicely but you'd better tell people we’ve had 14 ‘mils’ of rain overnight, so we’ll be nearer a soft six than a good rating,” offered Ball.

He opens with debut runner Exclusive Battle ($6.50 on TAB) for Buckley in the Sebring Sun at Glenthorne Park Maiden, 1007m.

“Trialled nicely to run us a race, drawn inside on the pace, lovely progressive filly, yep like her,” Ball enthused.

Former Mark Newnham galloper More Than Xtra ($7) contests the Become a MVRC Member Mdn, 1262m.

“This gelding had a fair while out in the paddock, but showed ability and he’s come on this prep.

"Bucko trialled him and said gave him a good feel, he’ll roll forward and run well.”

Former Anthony Cummings four-year-old mare Diamond Blush ($34) is a second emergency for the Manning River Hotel Class 3 Hcp (1262m).

“Sweating on getting a run, only had her two runs but she’s shown up in a lot better races down there and has worked really well.

“No favours the wide draw (16) but she’ll appreciate some give in the ground and has gate speed.

“She led to win at Wyong on a heavy track and was placed at Warwick Farm, good form for this grade I reckon.”

At present Taree is a Soft 6 with showers forecast today.
