John Schell's Tips For Muswellbrook (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a soft track

Race 1 - 12:35PM TAB.COM.AU COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN HANDICAP (1280 METRES)

1. Snap Decision had two trials in January and June before making his debut earlier this month with a second at Tamworth behind Justice Warrior. He went down narrowly in that event and Aaron Bullock sticks with him in this event having been aboard in his first start. 2. Dunstall The Gun was on debut at Muswellbrook earlier this month and finished a solid fourth when beaten less than two lengths. He should show up here with a repeat of that. 3. Sipping Shamus is on debut after two trials. He was placed in both trials and a forward showing is on the cards. 4. Nugget Smart was placed at Tamworth two starts ago before last start fifth at Scone.

How to play it: Snap Decision WIN.

Race 2 - 1:15PM MUSWELLBROOK MOTORS 2YO MAIDEN HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

1. Leading Impact had looked good winning two trials before debuting on the Kensington track with a solid fourth behind Grand Prairie. He was beaten less than two lengths in that event and that form looks solid for this despite the wide gate. 4. Risk And Famous is a Brazen Beau colt having his first start after two trials and a forward showing is expected. 5. Salvato has had three trials in preparation for this debut, being placed in the two most recent at Scone. 8. Dietrich is a Pariah filly on debut annd won a recent trial on the Beaumont track at Newcastle in preparation.

How to play it: Leading Impact WIN.

Race 3 - 1:55PM PIRTEK MUSWELLBROOK MAIDEN PLATE (1750 METRES)

1. Cavorting is a former Victorian which was having his first run for a new stable when finishing fifth at Dubbo. He was doing his best work late in that event and the step up in distance looks like it should suit. 12. Pierro’s Girl was placed at Warwick Farm when resuming before finishing last at Canterbury. She’s finished fourth at her past two starts at Hawkesbury and Newcastle. 4. Navy Pier was placed at Taree at his second start when resuming from a spell. 10. Epic Statement ran third at Scone when last produced and can show up again with a repeat of that.

How to play it: Cavorting EACH WAY.

Race 4 - 2:35PM ACORP COUNTRY BOOSTED CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

1. Beyond My Ken ran well when seventh in his first two runs back from a spell before running well when a last start second at Grafton. He’s drawn well enough here and can get back into winning form. 5. Tough Guy resumed for a new stable with a dominant win at Tamworth when an odds-on favourite and can go on with the job. 6. Nova Centauri resumed from a spell with a strong Scone win and has claims again. 2. City Gold Speed failed to fire at Grafton last time out but is worth another chance.

How to play it: Beyond My Ken WIN.

Race 5 - 3:15PM BENGALLA CUP (1280 METRES)

2. Zaru won in good style at Taree two starts ago and followed it up with a last start third at Grafton when working home well. 6. Ollie’s Secret was a solid last start second at Tamworth and is one of the chances again. 5. Our Boy Ollie finished fifth in the same race Ollie’s Secret when last produced and can get into the placings without surprising. 1. Contributingfactor has been racing well of late without winning and has the ability to be taking this out.

How to play it: Zaru WIN.

Race 6 - 3:55PM SCONE RURAL SUPPLIES BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1500 METRES)

3. Dale has shown ability in his career with two wins and two placings from seven starts. He is part-owned by Hollywood actor Matt Damon and resumes from a spell on the back of two trials, winning the latest of them at Scone. He was midfield in a Highway at Randwick before being spelled and looks suited by the 1500m here. 9. Zelestial has looked good winning three of her four starts since arriving in Australia. She has scored at Coffs Harbour and Scone at her latest two runs and should figure prominently again. 4. Rockbarton Icon is resuming from a spell and has the ability to sprint well fresh. 6. Hollywood Gold was placed when last produced and another placing wouldn’t shock in this line up.

How to play it: Dale WIN.

Race 7 - 4:35PM POWER FM BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1280 METRES)

7. Peninsula has only had three starts and was a short priced odds-on favourite in each of them. He broke his maiden at Tamworth before being spelled when defeating Ronny Bee. He’s had trials in preparation for this resuming run and looks set to return with a bold showing. 2. Vierville was a winner at the Gold Coast three starts ago. He was safely held at Grafton last time out but can lift on that. 12. Backward Glance won well at Scone three starts ago and hasn’t been disgraced in both subsequent runs at that track. 6. Bare To Witness has been down on form but bobs up every now and then and is suited by the small field.

How to play it: Peninsula WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 2 (1) Leading Impact.
Race 4 (1) Beyond My Ken.

Best Value:
Race 3 (1) Cavorting.
