John Schell's Tips For Gundagai (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a soft track

Race 1 - 1:20PM TOM WELLS MEMORIAL MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES)

8. Straandstorm is a well-bred I Am Invincible mare that has been placed in one of her six starts and is having her first run for the Joe Cleary stable in this event. She finished second at Hawkesbury three starts ago when only beaten by half a length and followed that up with a fourth at Wyong and a fifth at Hawkesbury. This looks a nice race for her to kick off with the new stable in. 4. More Cash has been midfield in his latest two starts at Narrandera and Wagga and has the advantage of gate one. 7. Our Lady Rockstar was midfield on the Acton track at Canberra when last produced and has place claims, while 2. Hot Toddy resumes here and wasn’t too far away in a Wagga event before the break.

How to play it: Straandstorm WIN.

Race 2 - 1:55PM JACK LINDLEY MEMORIAL MAIDEN PLATE (1000 METRES)

10. Screen Spirit is on debut for trainer Danny Beasley and comes into this having won his only trial on the Wagga Riverside track. He’s drawn ideally here in barrier two and is poised to make a winning start to his career. 11. Imminent Grace is also on debut for trainers Keith Dryden and Libby Snowden and wasn’t beaten too far in her only barrier trial at Queanbeyan. 6. Written By Lucy has performed well in each of three starts and warrants respect again, while 5. Vivid Blooms is having her first race start for a good stable and bears close watching.

How to play it: Screen Spirit WIN.

Race 3 - 2:30PM THANK YOU PETER ELLIOTT SUPER MAIDEN HANDICAP (1180 METRES)

2. Kickstart resumed from a spell for the new stable when finishing second at Albury last month. He’s only lightly raced with six starts to his name and has been placed in two of them. 3. Sacred Inferno is on debut for a good stable on the back of two trials and is set to run a bold race. 6. Doubtfree has had two runs back from a spell and comes into this after a last start second at Wagga in what was an encouraging display. 7. Adaj is on debut after a jumpout and a trial and a forward showing is on the cards from the good draw.

How to play it: Kickstart WIN.

Race 4 - 3:10PM FRANK CRIPPS MEMORIAL BENCHMARK 66 HANDICAP (1180 METRES)

6. Wonder Step has been racing in great form with three wins from four runs since resuming from a spell. He’s done the job well winning his latest two at Cowra and Dubbo, hitting the line hard last time out from back in the field. He only needs to have maintained that form to be winning again. 9. Grande Bellezza has looked good winning three of six starts including a resuming victory at Gilgandra when last produced. She looks the logical danger. 1. Kappy’s Angel was placed at Wagga on the Riverside track at her last start. She has a big weight but has the talent to make an impact. 2. Just Google Me followed a second at Wagga with a last start seventh at that track and is not out of this.

How to play it: Wonder Step WIN.

Race 5 - 3:45PM C.E READFORD CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1180 METRES)

3. Whiskey George was placed on the Acton track at Canberra before breaking through with a last start maiden win at Bathurst. Now that he’s won, he can go on with the job in this. 5. Performing Diva won at Moruya in good style when second-up from a spell. She then went to Randwick and tackled Highway grade when down the track. This is easier. 10. Party Boss won well at Albury at his latest start and is a contender again, while 9. Cinephile is a last start Wagga winner with solid claims.

How to play it: Whiskey George WIN.

Race 6 - 4:21PM DARBY WOOD MEMORIAL BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1800 METRES)

2. Newyork Missile has been racing in great form with a Wagga Riverside win two starts ago being followed by a close-up last start second at Narrandera. He’s drawn well here and should take plenty of running down with Blaike McDougall back aboard. 1. Final Comment ran well enough when second at Wagga a couple runs back and was midfield at Bathurst when last produced. 3. Breezy Bon comes into this after a last start Wangaratta win and warrants respect on that effort. 4. Buff In Disguise has been midfield in his most recent three starts and can get into the minor money without surprising.

How to play it: Newyork Missile WIN.

Race 7 - 4:55PM GARY READFORD MEMORIAL BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

2. Ken’Ker is a former Matthew Dale trained galloper that went to Danny Beasley, for wo he never had a start, and is now on debut for the Rob Potter stable. He’s a winner of two from 14 with a further six placings to his name. He hasn’t started since last December when finishing fourth at Moruya, and he’s been placed in one of three first-up runs. 6. Sundrop has been racing well with a win at Narrandera three runs back being followed by a fourth at Wagga and a last start second at Albury. 7. Dita Von has also been in solid form with a Corowa win three starts ago before a sixth at Wagga and a fourth at Albury. 9. Trouve broke his maiden at Goulburn at the end of May and comes into this on the back of a last start third at Wagga.

How to play it: Ken’Ker WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 2 (10) Screen Spirit.
Race 4 (6) Wonder Step.
