John Schell's Tips For Cootamundra Cup Day (Sunday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 1:10PM SCOBIE BREASLEY & STUART ANDERSON C1 & MDN PLATE (1600 METRES)

5. Star Empire wasn’t beaten too far in a couple of runs at Wagga and Gundagai before a ast start fourth at Corowa. He should give a good sight in this. 4. Pimpernel is capable of improving on recent efforts that include a last start fourth at Wagga. 3. Caravanserai comes into this on the back of a last start second at Moruya. 8. Hot One hit the line well when midfield at Echuca when last produced and has claims on that.

How to play it: Star Empire WIN.

Race 2 - 1:45PM HERITAGE MOTEL MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES)

5. Brutal Belle is knocking on the door for a win having been placed in her latest three outings at Moruya, Wagga and then Moruya again. She’s drawn well and gets another chance to break through. 2. Doubtfree has been placed in each of his last four runs and has the talent to give this a shake. 6. Carry On Lizzy is resuming from a spell and shouldn’t be underestimated. 1. Demanda was midfield on the Wagga Riverside on debut and can show up in this.

How to play it: Brutal Belle WIN.

Race 3 - 2:20PM NXT SIGNS MAIDEN HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

1. Will One is on debut after one trial which he won in good style at Goulburn. He’s drawn awkwardly but is in a good stable and looks primed to run well. 3. Ready To Rush is also on debut and has had two trials in preparation either side of a break, running third in the latest of them at Kembla Grange. 4. Instigate wasn’t beaten too far when a debut sixth at Corowa, while 9. Raining Violets is having her first start and ran third in a Canberra trial when beaten less than a length.

How to play it: Will One WIN.

Race 4 - 2:55PM TWIN HILLS CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

3. Rocco Lini was a debut winner at the Sapphire Coast then failed at that track and was spelled. He resumed with a third at Moruya and should be improved by that run. 4. Shammy Express resumed from a lengthy spell with a fourth on the Riverside track at Wagga and bears close watching second-up. 5. Written By Lucy comes into this after a second at Moruya in the same race Rocco Lini comes out of. 2. Hellberg has been close-up in his latest two starts and could get into the placings in this without surprising.

How to play it: Rocco Lini WIN.

Race 5 - 3:30PM VIRBAC COOTA PRODUCERS BM58 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

4. Whiskey George has struck winning form with a maiden win at Bathurst followed by a last start success at Gundagai when leading throughout and giving nothing else a chance. He only needs to maintain that form to be hard to hold out again. 1. Astunner showed a return to form with a last start placing and can get into the money again despite the big weight. 2. King Incanto is a former Kiwi that made his Australian debut with a fourth at Tatura. 8. Finn’s The Icon wasn’t far away at Leeton at his last start and has place claims.

How to play it: Whiskey George WIN.

Race 6 - 4:05PM RIVERINA FORD BM66 HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

4. Pleasurize has a great record with three wins and two seconds from just the five starts and comes into this after scoring a strong all the way victory at Leeton last time out. She should push forward again here and taken plenty of beating. 7. Dolly resumes from a spell here and has three seconds from three first-up runs. She hasn’t raced since a midfield effort at the Wagga carnival in May. 8. Grande Bellezza won two on end at Gilgandra and Gundagai before a midfield last start effort at Hawkesbury. 10. Hellinda was a last start second at Corowa and is rarely too far from the action.

How to play it: Pleasurize WIN.

Race 7 - 4:40PM CENTRAL HOTEL COOTAMUNDRA CUP (1600 METRES)

5. Due Calzini is fresh for this assignment having won three of his last four starts, the latest over 2500m at Wagga back on August 10. He’s had a tick over trial at Goulburn to be kept up to the mark for this and can make his presence felt over the mile from the inside barrier. 2. County Kilkenny was placed in the Forbes Cup and then ran fourth at Warwick Farm before having a trial on the Riverside track at Wagga in preparation for this. He can bounce back to his best form here. 4. Epaullo Creed is a bold frontrunner that was a winner at Moruya three starts back. He hasn’t been disgraced at Canberra and Moruya since then. 6. Burgundy Girl ran third at Wagga before being spelled and has finished third in both runs since resuming.

How to play it: Due Calzini WIN.

Race 8 - 5:15PM AUSTRALIAN MEAT GROUP BM58 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

3. Southern Dancer is first-up from a spell after winning over 2000m at Wagga back in June. She has been placed when fresh and has the talent to sprint well over the 1400m here with the apprentice claim. 2. Sundrop was a last start Leeton winner when scoring narrowly and another bold showing is on the cards. 4. Cosmic Ride won well at Canberra two starts ago and followed that up with a third at the same track. 5. Luna Angel has won her latest two runs at Goulburn and Canberra and bears close watching again.

How to play it: Southern Dancer EACH WAY.

Best Bets:
Race 3 (1) Will One.
Race 5 (4) Whiskey George.

Best Value:
Race 8 (3) Southern Dancer.
