Grafton Winners - Tips For Sunday 20th July

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Sunday’s Grafton meeting. Selections based on a soft track.

Race 1 - 12:40PM ANDREW TOM BUILDER PTY LTD MAIDEN PLATE (1100 METRES)

12. Archie Maximus was put out of business early in the race at Coffs Harbour a month ago and he didn’t have the best of luck on debut when favourite either. Forgive the 14 length margin, freshened up and should have his chance to run to his best this time.

Dangers: 8. Kickoff was a beaten favourite before a spell at Taree after leading and resumes with a couple of recent trials under here belt. Had a few chances but if she gets up on speed this is within her reach. 14. Zaindara is on debut for the Dunn stable and she’s trialled three times in Queensland without being exposed. Gets in light with the claim and any support would be significant. 11. Sol Filia is also on debut and she’s trialled just once in public, having a fairly easy time in behind them behind Tribeca Star. Another market watch.

How to play it: Archie Maximus WIN.

Race 2 - 1:20PM MACLEAN VARIETY MEATS F&M BM58 HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

3. With Style was put away after making a winning debut at this track back in February where she was solid in betting and proved too strong. Trialled twice in the lead up, winning the latest and while drawn awkwardly she does look hard to beat with any luck.

Dangers: 4. Cosmic Fortune has been around the mark of late with a Ballina placing prior to a closing fourth at Murwillumbah on heavy ground. Drawn nicely again and while record here isn’t great she gets another chance. 2. Miss Waterline was a popular winner on debut back in January but was safely held at a big price in Class 2 company at Eagle Farm on her return. Capable of improvement back in class. 1. Snow Falcon won twice at this track earlier in the year and comes back in grade on latest effort at Murwillumbah last month. Another who can lift.

How to play it: With Style WIN.

Race 3 - 2:00PM HOOKED ON SEAFOOD CG&E BM58 HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

7. Grey Effects has settled well back in both runs this time in and was able to get over the top of them to score at Port Macquarie last week. Draws a lot better here and while coming back 110m in trip he has the chance to back that win up.

Dangers: 6. Noble Missile ran a nice race when placed in this grade two starts ago before again not disgraced when up to a Class 2 at Grafton on Wednesday. Back in class again and has to be considered. 9. Full Regalia won over 1000m in January and ended his prep in a 2100m event in March. Best trip is probably somewhere in between and no surprise if he runs well fresh from the inside with a light weight. 5. Love Rat won in this grade in February and again at Casino in May. Close up last time out when coming back in trip and has each-way claims.

How to play it: Grey Effects WIN.

Race 4 - 2:40PM MACLEAN HOTEL BM58 HANDICAP (3120 METRES)

1. Will To Excel is a proven two miler and that’s a good head start in this field. Won at Warren over 2400m four starts ago and was hitting the line strongly at the end of 2000m at Mudgee last time. Down in class on his three runs since that win and should feature.

Dangers: 3. Deemee produced a strong finish at the end of 2200m to score at Dubbo a few weeks back and seems the type who should be effective over further so is a threat. 2. Zaynudin has been fair in a couple of runs in Queensland in stronger grade and could be an improver in a much more suitable contest. Has won at 2800m and placed in both runs here. Include. 5. Giddy Gan’s Joy has a good record in three starts at this track and should be at peak after four runs back from a break, including a couple of placings. Each-way chance.

How to play it: Will To Excel EACH-WAY.

Race 5 - 3:20PM MACLEAN BOWLING CLUB MACLEAN CUP (1400 METRES)

1. Matter Of Honour has top weight but won’t know himself in this company after taking on the likes of Getafix when resuming at Kensington. Has a fourth to Headley Grange and a Kenso win to his name last prep, drawn well and has to be a major player.

Dangers: 4. Xtra Approval has a bit of mixed form alongside him but can do better than his last showing at Hawkesbury. Slightly better set up for him and he’s entitled to be competitive. 11. Ostracised has been in good form so far this time in and got the job done at Coffs Harbour a month ago in similar sort of company. Probably has to push forward from the barrier and can be in the finish. 12. Wanda River backed up an upset win when resuming with a solid second at Tamworth in a good quality field. Won up to a mile so trip suits and drawn to have every chance.

How to play it: Matter Of Honour WIN.

Matter Of Honour runs fourth at Randwick in January

Race 6 - 3:58PM GM ACCOUNTING MACLEAN MAIDEN HANDICAP (1700 METRES)

12. Star Of Kongo has hit his straps at his past couple of starts and run well without having all the favours at Tamworth and in a similar race to this here two weeks ago. Did some work from a wide gate last time and stuck on. Good chance to go one better.

Dangers: 2. Flee With Me was well supported in the same race two weeks ago and boxed on fairly to run fifth, beaten a couple of lengths. Draw’s a little against her but she’s been around the mark of late and worth another chance. 6. Immortelle showed a glimpse of form last start when up to 1512m at Port Macquarie when running on from last into fourth. Extra ground again looks a plus and could continue to improve. 4. Bedtime was safely held at big odds in that 1720m here two weeks ago but did run well at Coffs Harbour prior, again at hefty odds. Drawn a lot better this time so could show up.

How to play it: Star Of Kongo WIN .

Star Of Kongo runs second at Grafton on July 6

Race 7 - 4:34PM THE CARNIVAL IS OVER BM58 HANDICAP (1700 METRES)

5. He’s Poplar is back from a three start campaign in Rockhampton where he won a maiden over a miler and weas runner-up last start at the same trip. Ran on well there from a long way back and may settle closer from a softer gate. Can show up.

Dangers: 2. Spills is back a notch in class after working up near the lead and fading over a mile here last week. Does tend to run well on his home track so entitled to forgive that. 6. Secret Keeper found it way too short when resuming over 1190m two weeks ago and no surprise to see him improve sharply up in trip and from the inside. Ran fourth over this course before a spell. Include. 3. Dupont showed a return to form with a solid second from up on pace at Murwillumbah last month and has won here. Each-way claims.

How to play it: He’s Poplar EACH-WAY.
