Breakthrough Likely For Torque Ti Amo (Kempsey-Mon)

By Neil Evans

One of the top country stables in NSW is eying off a potential treble at Monday’s Kempsey meeting in what could kick-start a big finish to the current season.

Ahead of Friday’s new season feature Coffs Harbour Cup meeting where he will likely have a big team on show, Matthew Dunn has pinpointed some very winnable races at Kempsey, especially late on the program.

But he will look to strike earlier in the TAB.com.au Maiden Plate over 1250m with an emerging filly by Cox Plate runner-up Castelvecchio.

Torque Ti Amo ($2.40 into $2.30 favourite on TAB) caught the eye when hitting the line hard to beat all bar the winner first-up at Grafton in only her second start, more than nine months after making a solid debut.

A lengthy break broken by two pairs of trials has the filly primed to make a big fresh statement, despite drawing the outside barrier (eight).

Then one of Dunn’s better chances all day arrives in the De Bortoli Wines Benchmark 58 Handicap over 1000m.

Progressive and sparingly-raced four-year-old Written Fame ($3.80 to $3.40 fav) is well placed to capture a fourth career win second-up, having finished close-up in a tougher Class 3 at Grafton three weeks ago.

And in the penultimate race - the Flower Hotels Class 1 Handicap over 1250m - ultra honest four-year-old Champonnet ($3.70 to $3.50 fav) will be out to grab a second win from four starts this preparation since switching to the Dunn camp on the Far North Coast from Annabel & Rob Archibald's Queensland training base earlier this year.

It’s the start of a big week of country racing, with Dunn confident he can also snatch the $150,000 Moonee Beach Hotel Coffs Harbour Cup (1600m) on Friday - a $3m Big Dance Qualifier - with progressive five-year-old Cranky Harry.

With five wins from 22 starts, the gelding comes in fifth-up having been beaten by under a length in a Class 6 at Doomben and will likely get back on his preferred soft ground on the NSW Mid North Coast.

The Kempsey meeting has attracted big and open fields on a surface rated a Heavy 9 with dry and sunny weather forecast.
