Bjorn Baker Set To Land At Albury Races On Friday
  • By Mark Brassel

One of Sydney’s most popular trainers Bjorn Baker will be a special guest of Albury Racing Club for their Albury Members Sprint Classic Raceday Luncheon on Friday.

Baker is currently fourth on the Metropolitan Trainers’ Premiership with 39 wins and trails only Chris Waller, Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott and Ciaron Maher.

The stable consistently produces winning results from a burgeoning number of horses based at Warwick Farm.

Baker’s team has landed three winning doubles in the space of a week with two winners at Canterbury Park on Wednesday (Spring Lee and Hollywood Hero), a double at Rosehill Gardens on 27 April (Disneck and Highlights) and at Bathurst on ANZAC Day (O’ziggy and Perfumist).

And just five days earlier Baker had scored a massive win with Overpass, his second successive victory in the $5 million The Quokka in Perth.

“I like winning, and it doesn't matter where I’ve won, whether it be in Albury, Bathurst or a major carnival; I get just as much of a buzz out of it,” Baker said.

“I love the competitiveness – it’s a tough game but I really thrive on the banter and having good fun.”

Limited tickets at $130 are available for the lunch and includes raceday admission, beverages, buffet lunch, reserved seating, racebook and more. Contact the club via – alburyracing.com.au

Albury’s Friday raceday carries $227,000 in prizemoney for the eight-race TAB program with the feature the $32,000 Members Albury Sprint Classic (1000m).

The following day is Tuncurry-Forster Jockey Club’s Ladies Day meeting with a free glass champagne on offer for all ladies.

“We should get a decent sized crowd as James Keith will be performing with his country rock band in the general admission area,” said TFJC’s president, Garry McQuillan. “And Hudson Rose will be delighting patrons in the pavilion area.

“Two nights’ accommodation at Sales Apartments will go to the best dressed lady and also up for grabs is a voucher from Wavelengths to the lady with best head gear.

“We have a raffle prize for an amazing two-night stay at Oakley Wines and Occasions Jewellers has a $500 voucher to win.

“There is a free bus service to and from the event with general entry tickets available on the day.”

Also on Saturday is Marthaguy Picnic Racing Club’s annual meeting at their racecourse located in the tiny village of Quambone (population of less than 200) around 30 minutes north.

Marthaguy picnics has a long racing history with the first races held in 1908 and after a brief hiatus due to rain, the races are now back as a regular event in May.

“Raceday in Quambone is a family friendly affair and includes a bar, luncheon, local and interstate bookies, a Fashions on the Field and a free jumping castle for the kids,” said MPRC’s secretary/treasurer (and Life Member) Marg Garnsey.

“Camping facilities are available in Quambone and on the racecourse grounds for free in a dedicated camping area.”
