Baker Stable's Terrific Run To Continue At Nowra (Sunday)

By John Schell

The winning run of Warwick Farm trainer Bjorn Baker is poised to continue at Nowra on Sunday with the form stable having four chances engaged.

A winning treble at Canterbury Park on Friday night was followed by a dominant win by Point And Shoot at Randwick on Saturday for the Baker team along with victory by Shezanalister.

The stable will be out to maintain the momentum when Jamacri ($1.85 favourite on TAB) lines up in the Sutho Old Boys Benchmark 58 Handicap (1400m) with Ashley Morgan taking the ride.

Jamacri had finished third on debut at Nowra in October 2023, then ran fourth at Wellington last April before having another spell.

She resumed at Port Macquarie last month and broke her maiden in decisive style.

“She’s a nice mare that’s heading in the right direction,” said Baker.

“She was primed to run well when resuming and Anna Roper took her straight to the front and she was never in danger of losing.

“She’s pleased us since then and I’m hoping she can go on with the job on Sunday.”

Baker will have Soho Artist ($2.40 fav) lining up in the Wobbegongs WSC CJB Benchmark 58 Handicap (1100m) with Olivia Chambers in the saddle.

A three-year-old filly by Trapeze Artist, Soho Artist started as a $1.35 favourite when resuming from a spell with a victory at Queanbeyan.

“It was a good win and a good confidence builder for her,” Baker said.

“Olivia was on her that day and she sticks with her at Nowra. She’s drawn a good gate and should be hard to beat again.”

Baker will round out the day at Nowra with two runners engaged to start in the final event, the Country Motor Company Super Maiden Handicap (1200m).

Istolea Merc ($3.20 fav) will line up with Morgan aboard, while stablemate Varazze ($26) will be partnered by Shaun Guymer.

“Istolea Merc has only had the two starts and finished second in each of them,” Baker said. “He ran well when resuming at Kemba Grange and it looks a nice race for him on Sunday.”

Varazze is a Pierro filly that has had two starts and resumed with a ninth at Bathurst behind Battle Hymn.
