Neil Evans's Selections For Coffs Harbour Races (Friday)

By Neil Evans

The track is rated a Heavy 8 with the rail out 4m from the 1000m to the 350m where the cutaway applies, and True the remainder.

Race 1 (11:20am) ELMAC ELECTRICAL CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (1615M)

A big and open card gets rolling over the middle distance. Consistent Taree three-year-old 6. Ramsey's Law ($5 on TAB) has continued to hit the line in and around this distance since a strong maiden win at Scone four runs back. Can settle back with cover here and is right at home on rain-affected ground.

Dangers: Progressive filly 9. Unwavering Faith ($2.50 favourite) is the immediate threat down in weight off an impressive maiden win at her fourth start. Draws to get a soft run off the speed and also relishes wet ground. Gold Coast three-year-old 5. Edification ($5.50) broke through in her second run this prep when stepping up sharply in trip and continues to go up in distance. Ex-Victorian 10. Luz Long ($4.60) has had two progressive runs in this region and gets a hefty 6kg weight drop after the rookie rider's claim.

How to play it: Ramsey's Law to win and trifecta 6,9/5,6,9,10/5,6,9,10
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 (12:00pm) PARK BEACH PLUMBING MAIDEN PLATE (810M)

Back to the rapid-fire short course and it's a real tester with most of the field either on debut or resuming. Local four-year-old mare 5. Amber Deluxe ($6) debuts after travelling well in a recent trial finishing in ground that was a little inferior.

Dangers: Debutante three-year-old 1. Brunel Kingdom ($4.80 fav) was just in front of the top selection in that same trial working home nicely, but was in the better ground. Watch the betting on four-year-old mare 11. Thiwlig ($7.50) having her first run in more than six months for smart home track stable after switching from Victoria. Keep safe too local four-year-old first starter 3. Pontoon Pete ($9.50) who trialled quietly and gets a 2kg claim; while include 4. Allez Blue ($8.50) and 9. Manapouri Miss ($6.50) if you're playing the wider exotics.

How to play it: Amber Deluxe each-way
Odds and Evens: Odds a special

Race 3 (12:35pm) WOOLGOOLGA CUP BENCHMARK 74 HANDICAP (2015M)

Tactical battle in the feature race. Progressive three-year-old 5. Casirina ($2.70 fav) can peak here getting out to this trip for the first time. Worked home nicely last start in heavy ground and while this is a jump in class, he's the best weighted runner dropping a hefty 6kg.

Dangers: Provincial five-year-old 1. Prospero ($3.30) hasn't had much go his way in two runs since sweeping home for a dominant CL2 win at Port. Draws the inside and any improvement in the track is a plus. Bred to stay, five-year-old 2. Continuation ($3.10) compounded badly in a deeper race second-up when ridden in front but should be ridden quieter up in distance.

How to play it: Casirina to win
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 4 (1:15pm) COFFS KERB & GUTTER MAIDEN PLATE (1215M)

Gold Coast three-year-old 8. Lucky Enuff ($3.10 fav) will appreciate more ground third-up and carries only half kilo over the set weight limit after the claim.

Dangers: Improving four-year-old 5. Hardedge ($4.60) gets multiple gear changes second-up, including blinkers coming off; while home track three-year-old 1. Canyons ($10) can improve second-up over more ground.

How to play it: Lucky Enuff to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 (1:55pm) MICHAEL FLICK HORTICULTURE MAIDEN HANDICAP (1415M)

Another tricky affair. Home track three-year-old 4. Newitt ($6.50) may be searching for longer after working home late in his last couple, but this is the lightest weight he's carried in five runs so far. Has been running purely on rain-affected ground will count for plenty against many of these.

Dangers: Improving four-year-old 2. Seaczar ($3.40) has shown steady improvement in three runs to launch his career and was right behind the winner at Grafton. Will need to slot in from the outside gate, but this is no harder. Capable filly 6. Luftwaffe ($2.40 fav) led for a long way in heavy ground at Taree and is hard fit deep into the prep. Draws to get a soft run, but still only been placed once from 10 starts. Keep safe provincial three-year-old 7. Zodiacus ($7) second-up with gear changes and a significant jockey change.

How to play it: Newitt each-way and box trifecta 2,4,6,7
Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 6 (2:35pm) INSPIRATIONS PAINT TRADIES CUP BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1415M)

Strong race for this grade and naturally any number of chances. Gold Coast five-year-old 1. Bumrah ($8) is flying and smart enough to overcome the wide barrier and make it four straight. Powered home in heavy ground to win here last start and has been given a seven-week freshen-up for the little drop back in distance. Rider's 2kg claim means he's not badly off at the top of the weights.

Dangers: Provincial mare 8. Dream Song ($2.30 fav) is bursting to win a second race, finishing hard at her latest in a solid CL1 at Quirindi. Has loomed to win a couple of times earlier in the prep against smarter opposition and from this draw again, should get her chance. Stablemate three-year-old 4. Alastor ($8.50) failed to run on first-up off a lengthy break and may need another run, but blinkers go on. Got plenty of time for improving Qld filly 5. Judder ($6.50) who was close-up resuming over the border and big weight off-set by a 2kg claim. Ultra honest mare 9. Memphis Squaw ($11) nearly always seems to find one better, but is right at home on rain-affected ground and will relish the extra distance and long home stretch.

How to play it: Bumrah each-way
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 (3:10pm) BOB CHAMBERS PTY LTD CLASS 2 HANDICAP (1012M)

Progressive provincial filly 10. Tequila Cabos ($3.80 fav) impressed, charging home to beat a handy BM 58 field at Taree. That made it two wins from only three starts, and has quickly shown a liking for wet tracks.

Dangers: Keep safe both five-year-old 6. Don't Cry Mama ($5.50) who resumes, and three-year-old 9. Poita ($4.60) who swept home for a first-up win in weaker grade.

How to play it: Tequila Cabos to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 8 (3:50pm) MID NORTH COAST SURVEYING CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1315M)

Keen on consistent three-year-old 2. Being Naughty ($2.60) who has found the line well in his last two since careering away for an easy maiden win three runs back. Loves it wet, and drawn to land a handy trail off the fence.

Dangers: Another Qld visitor, 3. Irish Thunder ($2.40 fav) only needs even luck from the tricky draw coming back from two solid efforts in metropolitan company. Keep safe local five-year-old 10. Supreme Prince ($7.50) who has been mixing his form, but the wetter the better.

How to play it: Being Naughty to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 9 (4:25pm) CNW ELECTRICAL WHOLESALE CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1315M)

Same trip and grade to finish. Keen on provincial three-year-old 4. One Star Shining ($2 fav) who has been freshened up with a quiet trial and boasts the superior rain-affected form.

Dangers: Far North Coast mare 1. Kim Alicia ($2.70) resumes off two trials. The handicapper hasn't missed her with 60.5kg fresh, but she was competitive enough against deeper provincial opposition last prep. Home track filly 8. Vaporetto ($7) has got home well into a place in her last two on heavy ground and sneaks back down in the weights.

How to play it: One Star Shining to win and box exacta 1,4,8
Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS
R3 5. CASIRINA ($2.70 fav)
R8 2. BEING NAUGHTY ($2.60)

BEST VALUE
R5 4. NEWITT ($6.50)
