Jockey Quotes - G1 Canterbury Stakes

He just loves Randwick and it was a second Group 1 on his home track for the popular Happy Clapper who now has another stoush with Winx in his future.

Find out what the jockeys made of their runs in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Royal Randwick.

Blake Shinn (Happy Clapper): “He was primed. He had two nice trials, he goes well fresh. Obviously from barrier one I was just hoping the cards would fall my way. I had to sort of extricate my way out of there on the turn. Fortunately he’s a big horse and I had a lap full under me, and once he got that clear daylight he really rounded the race off strongly. It was a great effort and sets himself up nicely.

“He’s seven years old now but he has been sparingly raced and treated with kid gloves his whole career so there is no reason why he couldn’t reach the best form of his career. He gave Winx a good run for her money last prep so I think we meet her in the Ryder and it’s going to be a good rematch again.”

Happy Clapper claims his second Group 1 at Royal Randwick

Tim Clark (Global Glamour): “As usual she ran a really brave race. I’m really proud of her.”

Corey Brown (Invincible Gem): “She ran really, really well. She got into a small bumping duel which took the wind out of her sails but she hit the line good.”

Glyn Schofield (Clearly Innocent): “They ran too fast for me early but he finished off well.”

Tye Angland (Endless Drama): “He went good. A step back in distance wasn’t ideal but he’ll go to the Doncaster now and be competitive.”

Josh Parr (Derryn): “He will benefit from the run. I would have liked to see him hit the line a little better.”

Kerrin Mcevoy (Foxplay): “We rode her quiet from the gate and we ended up detached from the main field. They went along at a solid clip. She did her best work over the last 100m. Up further in trip suits her now.”

Brenton Avdulla (Showtime): “He was okay. He was on the speed and I just think he was a little bit outdashed. Up in distance will suit him better.”

Jason Collett (Tulip): “She was a touch keen early. She came back and relaxed nice. It felt like we were going to run past Global Glamour however perhaps the 1300m is a touch to far for her at this level.”
