Neil Evans' Tips For Newcastle (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail out 6m

Race 1 3YO MAIDEN HCP (900m):

We start over the short course, and keen on one of the first starters. Press Statement filly 8. Victorella closed off impressively in a 1000m trial win on the Beaumont track, and stable renowned for striking fresh.

Dangers: Scone filly 6. Patino Ruby looks ready for her debut off a nice trial win sitting outside the leader and cruising home. Rosehill filly 9. Bat Pad can improve sharply on top of the ground after flopping on debut at Moe in soft going; while expect local 2. Potent View to improve at second start, with senior rider going on. Was preferred here to Gunnedah on Monday.

How to play it: Victorella to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Victorella wins a trial at Newcastle on September 23

Race 2 F & M MAIDEN HCP (1600m):

Now the girls go over the mile in a very thin affair. Scone mare 2. Au Pair was good late second-up at Muswellbrook, and will relish the step up in trip being by a Melbourne Cup winner.

Dangers: Warwick Farm mare 7. Queen Zoffany dropped out in a much deeper maiden at Kembla after a solid previous run when heavily specked. Wyong mare 6. Queen Snip finished off okay at home, and is drawn to get a soft run back in the field under a lighter weight.

How to play it: Au Pair to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Au Pair runs fifth at Muswellbrook on October 5

Race 3 F & M CLASS 1 HCP (1300m):

More depth here, but 4YO Randwick mare 3. Running Four Bub can go back-to-back after sweeping home to win her maiden at Goulburn third-up. Drawn to do little or no work on the inside around midfield.

Dangers: Progressive Hawkesbury filly 5. Supertanker is a clear threat fourth-up off her strong maiden win at home. Newcastle mare 2. My Rose Kingdom looks well placed freshened up off a fair run at Scone behind a very good Kosciuszko runner, and a handy trial since behind another smart one. Improving Coffs Harbour mare 6. Writeoff is best of the rest with a 2kg claim

How to play it: Running Four Bub to win; quinella 3 and 5 and trifecta 3,5/2,3,5,6/2,3,5,6. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 4 C, G & E CLASS 1 HCP (1300m):

Now the boys' edition. Improving Wyong 4YO 2. Atherton landed his maiden in dominant fashion two runs back before only collared late in a Class 1. Will roll forward, and be super competitive again.

Dangers: Muswellbrook 4YO 5. Noble Cause resumes off a quiet trial, with gear changes, and drawn to get an economical run off the speed; while 3YO 6. Sagacious can take the next step after notching his maiden at Port Macquarie.

How to play it: Atherton to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (1850m):

Rosehill 4YO 3. Unamerican can peak third-up over more ground after an even effort as a well backed favourite in a provincial BM 64 over the mile. Only career win so far came at this track and distance, and will be strong late being by a former Melbourne Cup winner.

Dangers: Randwick 3YO 10. Much Much Better disappointed third-up at Canterbury run down easily after cruising into the race on the turn. This is easier and drops in weight, but must be some query at the trip. Improving mare 5. Kim Alicia was no match for the winner third-up at Kembla, but little drop back in trip is a plus.

How to play it: Unamerican to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 MAIDEN PLATE (1500m):

Warwick Farm 4YO 3. Kutayha found the line well first-up at Wyong after two handy closing efforts in Victoria in autumn. From an ideal trailing barrier, is ready to win.

Dangers: Another 4YO on the improve 5. Savvy Legend should be in the finish from the inside draw; while big watch on Randwick colt 7. Believe So who did his best work late debuting on the Kensington track.

How to play it: Kutayha to win. Odds and Evens: Odds a special

Race 7 BM 68 HCP (1400m):

We save the best for last, and there's a few chances. Progressive Scone 4YO 4. Free Rider can win again after sailing home in dominant fashion in a country Class 2. Bit tougher here, but draws to get enough cover, and is headed for bigger prizes.

Dangers: Talented Rosehill 4YO 1. Zell rises sharply in weight after winning two of his last three. Needs it dry, and will get a cosy trail on the inside just off the speed. Consistent home track mare 8. Hard Faith has only just missed in her last two, and will roll forward again fourth-up; while keep safe another local, 5YO 9. Super who drops significantly in weight after hitting the line nicely in his last two.

How to play it: Free Rider to win and trifecta 1,4/1,4,8,9/1,4,8,9. Odds and Evens: Split
