Stable Keen To Honour Gwenda Markwell At Kembla (Tuesday)

Champion trainer Gwenda Markwell, the undisputed Queen Of Kembla, will be remembered at Tuesday's massive Kembla Grange meeting.

Markwell sadly passed away last Friday evening aged 61 after a battle with cancer and the Kembla racing community remains in mourning of one of the region's greatest ever trainers.

The two-time Group 1 victor and 19-time Kembla premiership winner was omnipresent at every meeting on her home track and will be sorely missed for years to come.

Jockeys will wear black armbands to honour the remarkable horsewoman as her stable prepares to saddle up the final runners of her illustrious career in five of the 10 races on the afternoon.

The late Gwenda Markwell

"She would want the team out there and to finish with her name there on a Melbourne Cup meeting, being such a big meeting, is fitting," Markwell's foreman Nigil Monahan said.

"This will be the last time the horses race under her name, so it would be good if we can get a win or two.

"At the moment she is still the leading trainer at Kembla Grange, she is still on top and loved winning races at Kembla Grange."

Markwell's horses will race under the name of her long-time supporter Ross McConville from Wednesday onwards. But the stable is hoping to add a couple more winners to her impressive tally before the switch.

Monahan rates three-year-olds Amigos No More ($7 on TAB) and Never Sorry ($10) among the stable's best chances.

Amigos No More will have his third career start in the I98 Feel Good Midway 3YO Maiden Plate (1400m) while Never Sorry will look to break a run of near misses in the PFD Food Services Maiden Handicap (1200m).

"Amigos No More has always been around the mark," Monahan said. "He is still not mature enough but we've put the blinkers on him to sharpen him up.

"Never Sorry is running good this preparation and her last time on a heavy track, she just doesn't handle them, so we've been waiting for the track with her. She would be finishing well and be somewhere near the placings."

The leading yard will also launch a two-pronged attack with Country Girl ($41) and Cuneiform ($81) in the Park Fuels Maiden Handicap (1200m).

Another Val ($34) will have his second career start in the Jack Primmer Electronics Maiden Handicap (1200m) with long-time rider for the stable Scott Pollard aboard while Mentalism ($6.50) is in the Go Hire Benchmark 64 Handicap (1200m).

Monahan confirmed consistent mare Nautical Miss would not line up in the last event and would instead run in the Midway Handicap at Randwick where she is a $6 chance on TAB.

Racing begins on Tuesday from 12.05pm with the last coming up at 6.33pm.
